Summary: Pediatric MRI: Whole-Body Screening for Children with Cancer
Your child may be able to participate in this study if he or she has a type of cancer that may spread to other areas of the body. The standard imaging tests used to find out if cancer has spread, such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), can take a long time, are very expensive, and may require medication to make a child sleepy. Doctors want to find out if a fast, whole-body MRI can give them accurate information about the extent of your child’s disease so that in the future this single scan might replace the other longer scans. Children and young adults 21 years old or younger with cancers such as Ewing’s sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, neuroblastoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma may be able to join this study. If you choose to have your child participate in this study, a whole-body MRI will be performed in addition to the treatments and tests prescribed by his or her doctor. A total of 226 children from 20 different institutions will be entered on the study that is coordinated by the American College of Radiology Imaging Network, known as ACRIN. ACRIN is a national cancer research organization sponsored and funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It is made up of investigators at over 100 leading medical facilities located in North America and several institutions abroad. The goal of ACRIN is to improve the health, longevity and quality of life of cancer patients by conducting clinical trials that evaluate diagnostic imaging and image-guided treatment procedures.

Should I buy bottled water?

SHOULD I BUY BOTTLED WATER?

www.icgov.org/water.htm

If you like water with a different taste, you can buy bottled water, but it costs up to 200 times more than municipal drinking water. Of course, in emergencies bottled water can be a vital source of drinking water for people without water.
Bottled water is popular; Americans spend $2 to $3 billion annually to buy this product - half the amount spent in the United States to protect tap water ! Overall, about 10 to 15 percent of US households drink bottled water regularly. Remember if you use bottled water, consider it a food and refrigerate it after opening. IS BOTTLED WATER REGULATED?

Preprofessional Study
Requirements for admission to most professional academic programs can be met by study at Iowa State University . These requirements may be met in the course of obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State or at a level below that of a degree, depending on the intended field of study. The specific courses taken in a preprofessional program will depend primarily upon the admission requirements of the professional schools to which a student wants to apply. In some programs requiring three years of preprofessional work, a student may, by careful planning, complete requirements for the bachelor’s degree upon transferring to Iowa State up to 32 semester credits of professional coursework. Generally these credits will be counted as electives, but a maximum of 24 may be used as major credits in interdisciplinary studies and a smaller number as major credits in appropriate departments.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a genetic disease characterized by changes in movement and behavior. To date, little research has been done on individuals who are at risk for developing the disease. PHAROS is an observational study designed to monitor people who are at risk for developing HD, and to survey their attitudes and beliefs about their "at-risk" status. Investigators hope this study will help answer some important questions about HD, such as: 1.) What are the earliest signs of HD and when do they start? 2.) How accurate are the measures that physicians use in detecting the onset of HD? 3.) What factors influence the age at which a person carrying the HD gene develops the illness? and 4.) In a group of people at risk for HD, how many will develop signs of the illness over a minimum three-year period of observation?

(AS PER AMENDMENT 1/22/98: the dose is increased every 24 hours, in the absence of onset of analgesia or adverse events. After 2-5 days, patients who respond to their medication continue treatment at home for 5-8 days. Patients who do not respond will be switched to the other regimen (i.e., placebo to SNX-111, or SNX-111 to placebo). After 10 days, responding patients are unblinded and asked to enroll in the long-term, open-label extension protocol. Patients remain on a fixed dose at the therapeutic level found in the previous study. The dose may be increased or decreased at the discretion of the investigator. Patients may continue therapy on a long-term basis until the drug is approved.
