SOCIAL STUDIES ACTIVITIES
Solar and Wind Energy Around the World
Teacher's Notes Objective:
Each student 1) decides upon uses for solar and wind energy; 2) designs and constructs an energy collage; and 3) titles the collage. Teaching Suggestions:
1. Students are given magazines, catalogs, and newspapers to cut out pictures for an energy collage.
2. After the collage is complete, a title should be given. A contest could be held to see which collage shows the most ways of using solar or wind energy.
3. Winners could be rewarded with a solar powered clothes dryer (clothes line and pins). Extend the Activity:
Have students write the "message" their collage represents and present their products to the class.
Solar and Wind Energy Around the World
Problem:
How does our world use wind and solar energy? Materials:
1. Magazines, catalogs, and newspapers
2. Construction paper or poster board
3. Glue Activity:
1. On paper, list uses of wind or solar energy. 2. Look through magazines, catalogs, and newspapers for pictures depicting the use of solar and wind energy. Cut out these pictures. 3. Glue pictures onto poster board or construction paper to make a collage.

State studies electronic database for prescriptions
CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) - The state is studying an electronic database that would list the names of people who get certain prescription drugs.
"It's hard to quantify because no uniform system is in place," said Dale Woolery, associate director for the Governor's Office of Drug Control Policy. "What we know is anecdotal."
A 2002 survey by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services showed that nearly 30 million people 12 and over have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons.
"The main thing is to identify people who have a drug abuse problem and deal with them," said Lloyd Jessen, executive director of the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners. "Right now, they can avoid detection."
About 20 states already have prescription monitoring: 23 more are in the planning stages.

Iowa's Waverly Light and Power, a municipal utility located about 150 miles northeast of Des Moines, has produced an 8.5 minute promotional video on wind energy. Waverly became the first municipal utility west of the Mississippi to install a wind turbine in 1993, and currently operates three wind turbines with a combined rated capacity of 2.4 megawatts (MW). The turbines provide five percent of the energy needs of the city. CORALVILLE, IOWA - It's a US$280 million deal that evokes a paraphrase of a line from "Field of Dreams": Are we in heaven, Iowa . . . or a rainforest? It's definitely two out of three. The project, which will create 2,200 new, fulltime jobs, is headed for Coralville, Iowa, three and a half miles (5.6 km.) northeast of Iowa City. The Iowa Child Institute ( www.iowachild.org ) has tapped the city as the site for the Iowa Child Project, designed to enhance state education and quality of life, according to project officials. The Coralville complex will include an enclosed rainforest spanning five acres (two hectares), ranking as the world's largest. In addition, the project will include an IMAX theater, an aquarium, a K-12 public school and a teacher education facility. The heaven part of the project awaits. That will only arrive with the project's payoff, which includes a significant economic development impact. ABOVE RIGHT: The project's entrance, as depicted in an artist's rendering.

OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD RECIPIENTS FOR 2003

The Elgin Heinz Outstanding Teacher Awards recognize exceptional teachers who further mutual understanding between Americans and Japanese. The awards are presented annually to two pre-college teachers in two categories, Humanities and Japanese Language, and consist of a certificate of recognition, a $2,500 monetary award, and $5,000 in project funds.
The Award is named in honor of Mr. Elgin Heinz, a pioneer in educating American pre-collegiate students about Asia. Born in China in 1913, he spent forty years teaching in San Francisco's public schools. Mr. Heinz served as Education Director for the Japan Society in 1960, and is nationally known for his many curriculum guides on Asia. He continues to this day to serve as a consultant on the development of materials and methods for teaching about Asia.
An independent national selection committee, consisting of leaders in the fields of Japanese language and cultural education in the United States, selected the two recipients listed above based on their outstanding long-term commitment to teaching about Japan as well as their national leadership in this area.
