While they were married they started the first coeducational university. This school was based on equality between the sexes. She took over the school after Pythagoras died in a fire. She and her two daughters ran and taught at the school. However, Theano did more than run the school. She discovered her own rule. This rule is what is not called golden geometry. This is particularly true of scientists who are prone to asking "what, where, when, who and how?". Sometimes all in the same sentence. This continual questioning seems to start at an early age too. As soon as we’re able we are taking our favourite toys to pieces, often accompanied by a kind of "Pa-doing!" sound as a hidden spring sends parts of the toy to every corner of the room. I well remember the state that my early chemistry experiments left mother’s curtains, and the consternation that my early experiments in manned flight caused. Fortunately, many of us survive childhood to pursue careers in the sciences. I am constantly reminded of our inquisitive nature by our trainee Medical Physicists. For them, everything is new in their voyage of discovery and understanding - but they know that you have covered that part of the voyage before and could you explain just why x is proportional to y^2? Sadly, if the answer to their question is non-trivial they rarely get a straight answer, just directions so that they can discover the answer for themselves. I have always admired inventors. Take the inventor of the vacuum cleaner, Hubert Cecil Booth. Watching cleaners in a railway carriage blow dust around he thought that a good suck would be less messy. Bratkovsky (Bratkovski) joined the Quantum Structures Research Initiative Department at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, California, as a regular member in 1996 (on right in the photo). Dr. Bratkovsky graduated with honors from the Department of Theoretical Nuclear Physics at Moscow Engineering Physics Institute in 1979. Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918, President from 1866-1885) A radical idea in American education was born when Andrew Dickson White and Ezra Cornell crossed paths in the New York State Senate. White was a worldly intellectual whose dream was to create a "truly great University" that would "afford an asylum for Science where truth shall be taught for truth's sake. . . ." He and Cornell, a farmer and inventor who made his fortune developing the telegraph system with Samuel F.B. Morse and Hiram Sibley, agreed the new institution would be nonsectarian, a controversial stance for the time. White and Cornell successfully politicked to obtain the benefits of the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862 for their new university. On Feb. 7, 1865, White introduced into the State Senate a bill which established Cornell University as an institution for "the cultivation of the arts and sciences and of literature, and the instruction in agriculture, the mechanic arts and military tactics, and in all knowledge." Gov. Reuben E. Fenton signed the bill that constitutes Cornell's charter two months later on April 27. White was largely responsible for recruiting faculty to come to the new institution, and as president, he was instrumental in the development of the university's library and its other collections by his own purchases and through encouraging the gifts of others.
