Inventors Elijah McCoy Earl Warrick W.K. Kellogg Elijah McCoy Elijah McCoy was a famous inventor. He was an African American Man. His parents were slaves who escaped on the Underground Railroad. He went to Scotland to study mechanical engineering. He moved to Michigan and he worked as an oilman and fireman. He had to oil the wheels when the train stopped, and shovel coal into the fire to make the train run. Elijah McCoy was treated unfairly because of the color of his skin. He used his engineering skills to invent the lubricator for the train's wheels. He also invented the ironing board, a better heel for shoes, and the water sprinkler. Today people still ask for the "Real McCoy" when they want the best. Written by second and third grade students in Room 6, Spartan Village School, East Lansing This report is about Earl Warrick He is a very famous person, but not a lot of people know about him. And so know I will tell you about Earl Warrick, who lived in
Midland, Michigan, a great person.

P. B. Downing
Not much is known about P. B. Downing, but his mailbox, patented in 1891 is still in use. You can recognize it as the small, cast-iron, red-white-and-blue box that is usually found mounted to a pole or wall. To open it requires lifting a small, fairly heavy cover that closes rather firmly when let go. While the cover is open, a metal plate is engaged inside the box that prevents access to the box's interior. - Bill Clearlake - Back
Lewis H. Latimer
Edison had been trying in vein to find a filament that would burn long enough to make an electric lamp feasable for general use. Lewis Latimer developed the carbon filament that made the Edison Lamp commercially viable. Lewis Latimer wrote the first textbook on the Edison Company's lighting systems. Lewis Latimer has many patents to his credit, as well has having designed the lighting systems for the cities of New York, Paris, and London. Latimer was one of the few African-American inventors to achieve a fair measure of fame and considerable wealth in his lifetime. - The Afro-American Inventor, C. R. Gibbs, pub. C. R. Gibbs, 1975 -

Narrative Essay
Elijah McCoy (1843?-1929) made important contributions to the design of railroad locomotives after the Civil War. He kept pace with the progress of locomotive design, devising new lubricating systems that served the steam engines of the early twentieth century. These were demanding indeed, for they operated at high temperatures and pressures. The date of McCoy's birth is not known; various sources give it as March 27, 1843; May 2, 1843; and May 2, 1844. His parents, George McCoy and the former Mildred Goins, were fugitive slaves who had escaped to Canada from Kentucky. At the time, Canada was part of the British Empire, which had abolished slavery in 1833. When the Canadian leader, Louis Riel, launched a rebellion in 1837, the British government used troops to defeat the rebels. George McCoy enlisted with the British force. In return for his loyal service, he received 160 acres of farmland near Colchester, Ontario. Here, he raised a family of 12 children.
Pioneer in Automatic Lubrication
Locomotives were heavy, and subjected their moving parts to considerable wear. Lubrication was essential for these partsmany of which were applied to railroad axles. These axles carried the full weight of locomotives and railroad cars, and were particularly subject to wear. But engineers had arranged for them to rotate within oil-filled chambers. The rotation of the axle carried oil into its bearing, and the oiled bearing allowed the axle to turn freely while reducing wear to a minimum. However, the direct use of oil-filled chambers did not apply to a locomotive's steam engine, which provided its power. Many parts of this engine operated under the pressure of steam, which acted to push oil away from the moving parts. This made it necessary to stop the engine when oiling it. McCoy saw that he could keep the engine running by using steam pressure to pump the oil where it was needed.

Why should I care about patents?
Patents are probably the most widespread form of IP in biotechnology and are set up by governments to encourage innovation. In return for public disclosure of innovations and developments through publication of a patent, the government grants the patentee the right to exclude others from practicing these innovations for a specific period of time. It is hoped that these inventions will provide the basis for further innovations, improve the economic position of the country and ultimately increase the standard of living. Patents therefore can have implications for every person regardless of their age, knowledge of IP and social status. Patents provide valuable economic and social benefits to both researchers and the general public alike. Some of the benefits are detailed below:
  • Disseminate research to society's benefit
Level the playing field and stimulate markets
By developing or purchasing IP and licensing it amongst the market place, market share is decentralized, and as a result the technology is much more widely accessible by all. By licensing amongst a large number of corporations and researchers, the chance of further inventions and improvements are increased due to the large amount of researchers with access to the technology and the diversity of skills that exist amongst an increasingly wide range of innovators.
Increase the value of an institution
By increasing the size of its IP portfolio, an institution enhances its value, not only in a monetary sense by licensing the IP to others, but also its market share. The institution may capitalize on its IP portfolio to command a higher price in merger or acquisition negotiations or to raise capital to fund further research. Take-over bids are sometimes initiated by companies wanting access to an institution's IP. IP portfolios can therefore also be used as bargaining chips in negotiations. Recently companies have been known to pay exorbitant fees to access the rights to a particular technology if they are aware that they may be able to bring an infringement case against a 3rd party who is known to be making unauthorized use of the IP.
