Inventing Flight:
The Wright Brothers and Their Predecessors
John D. Anderson Jr.
John Hopkins University Press 2004 A book review by Danny Yee In this short account of the invention of heavier-than-air flight, aeronautical engineer Anderson focuses on the people involved. He only touches in passing on their personal lives, however, concentrating on the course of their experimental work and the development of their ideas. Anderson goes back to Leonardo da Vinci and covers figures such as William Henson and Alphonse Penaud, but he devotes most attention to George Cayley, Otto Lilienthal, Samuel Langley, and of course the Wright brothers. He traces the links between them and the development of a common body of aerodynamic theory and practical aeronautical knowledge and also highlights the ways in which failures of communication or misunderstandings forced reinvention, and the divide between inventors and physicists. Aspects of the science dihedral angles, aspect ratios, and suchlike are explained in separate boxes, but only where they are necessary to understand the progress of aeronautical technology; there's no attempt at a systematic exposition of the science of flight The Wright brothers have been written about extensively, but

Inventing Telepathy
Two researchers with NASA laboratories, Chuch Jorensen and Brad Betts, stand poised to break the next barrier of communication ... telepathy. Using a little known phenomonen - the fact that when weare thinking to ourselves, muscles in the larynx and tongue "practice" the thoughts even if we don't actually say anything, Jorgensen and Betts built a sensor system around the neck to pick up the neural impulses that fire the muscle movement and compare that with an established set of phonemes, which in turn can be interpreted by a computer as commands, text in a word processor, or playing a synthesized or pre-recorded sound. While still several years from practical development, this research opens up a dramatic range of possibilities. Beyond the obvious benefits to people who have lost their voice to throat cancer or injury, such a system could revolutionize "voice-to-text" applications, as the central problem with such systems typically has been both the difficulties in filtering out background noises and the self-consciousness that people feel when talking to themselves in public.

Driven by visions of pots of gold, inventors spend countless hours conjuring, developing and perfecting an idea. If an inventor is fortunate, the idea is one that can achieve commercial success and pay a return on the inventor's inspiration and sweat. Unfortunately most inventions never make it to market. Of those that are commercialized, only a few actually make enough money to repay an inventor for risks taken and time and money spent.
The single most important question an inventor must ask, at the earliest possible stage, is whether or not an invention should be developed at all. Inventors should heed the words of Thomas Edison: "Inventing is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration." In other words, the idea is the easy part. I would add further, that once an inventor starts perspiring, it's hard to stop. Each hour or dollar spent developing an idea can become justification to spend yet another hour, yet another dollar, until fatigue, an empty bank account, or just possibly success, ends the cycle.
The purpose of this essay is to help inventors determine, on their own, which ideas are worth pursuing and which should be discarded. Third party evaluations by reputable organizations such as the

Indie Games Con (IGC) is a fun, informal and informative community gathering of independent game developers from around the world. IGC is designed to be a summit meeting of like-minded developers with the shared goal to focus on collaboration and building community. Along with sessions on game art, technology, tools and business, the event has a central ShowOFF Center where developers can showcase their current prototypes, demos and newly released games. This provides an excellent opportunity for their peers to play and provide valuable feedback.
"IGC has become an annual pilgrimage to premiere new games and connect with like-minded entrepreneurs," comments Mark Frohnmayer, Co-Founder and President of GarageGames. Inventing New Christmas Traditions
There are certain Christmas standards that almost every family who celebrates Christmas does the tree, the cookies, the stockings. But the thing that makes each holiday memorable is the unique spin your own family puts on tradition. Here, some of the parents of Parent Soup describe how they've created their own Christmas traditions. Perhaps one of them will strike you as a good addition to your own holiday routine, or inspire you to create a new tradition of your own. Happiest of holidays from everyone at Parent Soup. "I just wanted to remind folks while you're setting out cookies for Santa Claus, make sure you set out some candy corn. It's for Santa's reindeer deer eat corn, but reindeer eat candy corn. Those reindeer get hungry flying all over the place, and Santa seems to get all the goodies."
