    Introduction
Since the first Egyptian farmers discovered the annual reappearence of Sirius just before dawn a few days before the yearly rising of the Nile, ancient civilizations around the Mediterranean have sought to explain the movements of the heavens as a sort of calendar to help guide them conduct earthly activities. Counting phases of the moon or observing the annual variations of daylength could, after many years' collection of observations, serve as vital indicators for planting and harvesting times, safe or

    Inventing an INTRAnet
A metaphor for building a master plan for institutional technology growth
    R. W. Cavenagh
    December 3, 1994 (Clarifications/revisions through Dec 16)
    About this document
    1. This document is about planning processes, using the creative energy of many individuals at an institution to rough out, then refine, a long term plan for technology growth in a way that is both coherent (because it considers the whole institution) and sustainable (because every component can be revised and changed without altering the concept of the whole). 2. This draft is a brief `executive' version of a larger document under development. It is intended to be generic, in that it could apply to any institution. I hope to publish the fuller version electronically through a jurying organization. I am circulating the draft to a few folks on campus for comment and feedback, knowing that it does speak to some future Dickinson issues. 3. The finished `paper' will incorporate a number of hypertext attributes, both in paper-based and electronic versions. For this reason I have left vacant a small column on the right side of each page. The final versions will permit readers to jump through the document in many different ways, and will permit pulling in supplemental information. 4. The word INTRAnet (without the caps) has been used as a descriptive label in a number of technical publications about networking. A Dialog search has not turned up any use of the word as I will begin to define it, nor have I seen it used capitalized in the fashion I use. Provisionally, I'm claiming it.

    Inventing the Telephone
    • A Brief History
    • Although Bell was just learning electricity, he was already an expert on sound and speech. Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, Bell was the son of Alexander Melville Bell, a professor of elocution who had devised a technique called visible speech, a set of symbols that represented speech sounds. The elder Bell used the technique to teach the deaf to speak. Alexander Graham Bell had little interest in being a businessman. In July 1877, he married Mabel Hubbard, and set sail for what proved a long honeymoon in England. He left the growing business to Hubbard and Sanders, and went on to a long productive career as a scientist and inventor.

    Overview
    W. W. Norton presents Inventing America , a balanced new survey of American history by four outstanding historians . The text uses the theme of innovation—the impulse in American history to "make it new"—to integrate the political, economic, social, and cultural dimensions of the American story. From the creation of a new nation and the invention of the corporation in the eighteenth century, through the vast changes wrought by early industry and the rise of cities in the nineteenth century, to the culture of jazz and the new nation-state of the twentieth century, the text draws together the many ways in which innovation—and its limits—have marked American history.

The bittersweet drama INVENTING THE ABBOTTS chronicles the coming of age of two brothers, Doug and Jacey Holt, played with touching sincerity by Joaquin Phoenix (TO DIE FOR) and Billy Crudup (SLEEPERS). Set in 1957 in Haley, Illinois, the show is reminiscent of several old movies, but the story remains fresh and relevant. Doug has fewer social graces than his slightly older brother Jacey. Doug will try anything, including painting on fake sideburns, to impress the girls. Jacey, on the other hand, attracts female companionship like honey attracts flies. As much as they profess their differences, they are remarkably similar in looks and tastes.

    Inventing the Future
by Tim O'Reilly "The future is here. It's just not evenly distributed yet." I recently came across that quote from science-fiction writer William Gibson, and I've been repeating it ever since. So often, signs of the future are all around us, but it isn't until much later that most of the world realizes their significance. Meanwhile, the innovators who are busy inventing that future live in a world of their own. They see and act on premises not yet apparent to others. In the computer industry, these are the folks I affectionately call "the alpha geeks," the hackers who have such mastery of their tools that they "roll their own" when existing products don't give them what they need. The alpha geeks are often a few years ahead of their time. They see the potential in existing technology, and push the envelope to get a little (or a lot) more out of it than its original creators intended. They are comfortable with new tools, and good at combining them to get unexpected results.

    16. 19th Century Scientific American Online
Credited with inventing the first practical sewing machine. This biography is from Scientific American Online.
    http://www.history.rochester.edu/Scientific_American/mystery/howe.htm
Elias Howe first heard the term sewing machine while working in Boston for Ari Davis, who made and repaired precision instruments. People had been trying to invent such a device for half a century in America and abroad, without any great success. Some early devices patented in England simply did not work. A functional sewing machine, introduced by French tailor Barthelemy Thimonnier in 1830, roused tailors to radical action. Fearing that they would be put out of business by the laborsaving equipment, they stormed and destroyed Thimonnier's eightymachine plant. The inventor fled and later died a bankrupt. In 1834, Walter Hunt, credited with creating a forerunner of the Winchester re peating rifle and the safety pin, built America's first sewing machine but lost interest in a device he saw as a destroyer of jobs. But Ari Davis thought such a machine would make someone a fortune, and Howe took his employer's opinions to heart. Born in 1819 in Spencer, Massachusetts, Howe had apprenticed to a textile mill at sixteen, then, unemployed after the panic of 1837, moved to the big city to seek work and apprenticed to Davis. By the early 1840s, he had married and had children to support. But Howe, always in frail health, became too ill to work. His wife began to take in sewing to pay the growing family's bills. Watching her at work, Howe realized that no machine would be able to duplicate the motions of hand and arm in sewing. Instead, he hit on a process that used thread from two different sources. A needle with its eye at the point would push through the cloth, creating a loop of thread on the far side; then a shuttle would slip thread through the loop, creating a tight lock stitch.

Inventing a New Kind of Pencil
So you want to do some inventing? Well then, ask a student in your class to volunteer showing a pencil to the class that needs improving? For example, a pencil like this:
    Then ask the following question:
    What's wrong with this pencil?
    Here are some typical replies:
    • small
    • ugly
    • no eraser
    • needs sharpening
    • made out of wood
    • can't see inside and how it works
    • can't write on chalkboard
    • not made of steel
    • goes down too fast
    • lead always breaks
    • can't eat it
    • easy to lose
    • not interesting
    • not decorated
    • too skinny
    • too fat
Don't forget to say some of those encouraging words . And remember, be non-judgmental, do not allow any criticism, and quickly jot the ideas on the board. Then ask "How can we improve this pencil?" What new features can we add to make it more useful. Here are some more ideas.
    Kids Inventions!
    • put an eraser on
    • make the eraser bigger
    • change the color
    • make it longer
    • get a new one
    • make it fatter
    • make it skinnier
After getting half a dozen or so more idea, I dig into my box of pencils and pull out one to fix one of the above mentioned problems. Usually someone notices the lack of an eraser, so I like to show a pencil that has two erasers on the end.
Invariably someone blurts out that it looks like a hammer. Yes, perhaps you might find one like this in your doctor's office! Then I go around the room testing some student's knee reflex, and imitate writing down on a clipboard. "Yup, your reflexes are fine!"
