Weed: The USDA-APHIS defines a weed as any plant that poses a major threat to agriculture and/or natural ecosystems within the United States. Although this is more specific than a typical dictionary definition (i.e. a plant growing in an undesired location), it more accurately portrays the economic and ecological impact weeds can cause. Alien species: A species introduced and occurring in locations beyond their known historical natural range. This includes species introduced from other continents, bioregions, ecosystems, and also those not native to the local geographic region. Synonyms for alien species include exotic, non-native, non-indigenous, and introduced species. Only about 400 of the thousands of intentionally or accidentally introduced plant species are considered problematic with respect to adverse effects on agricultural or our native biota. Invasive species: a species that demonstrates rapid growth and spread, invades habitats, and displaces other species. Species that are prolific seed producers, have high seed germination rates, easily propagated asexually by root or stem fragments, and/or rapidly mature are predisposed to being an invasive.

One of The Arboretum’s primary concerns relative to wildfires and forest management is the issue of noxious, invasive weeds, which are spreading rapidly throughout the west. Invasive weeds tend to move into sites where the soil has been disturbed. Both fires and forest management activities often result in disturbed soils. Where invasive weeds spread into native habitats, native plant populations continue to be reduced. The Colorado Plateau region includes many unique habitats as well as many rare, threatened, and endangered plant species. In fact, about 15% of the native plant species of the Colorado Plateau is globally rare, whereas the average in other regions of the country is about 10%.
