Parent Contract
I know that the Internet can be a wonderful place for my kids to visit. I also know that I must do my part to help keep them safe on their visits. Understanding that my kids can help me, I agree to follow these rules:
  • I will get to know the services and websites my child uses. I will set reasonable rules and guidelines for computer use by my children and I will discuss these rules and post them near the computer as a reminder. I will not overreact if my child tells me about something "bad" he or she finds or does on the Internet. I will try to get to know my child's "online friends" and Buddy List contacts just as I try to get to know his or her other friends. I will try to put the home computer in a family area. I will report suspicious and illegal activity and sites to the proper authorities.

    The Internet Safety Debate
Yes it's OK to filter Internet content in schools. No students should learn how to handle the Internet as it is. The debate continues… no solution in sight. You'd search far and wide to find an adult who does not support protecting children from pornography, hate speech, and other undesirable content on the Internet. But exactly how to keep children safe has sparked intense debate among parents, educators, politicians, technological experts, and others. Some observers question children's need to use the Internet at all. Why not simply use more traditional methods of research and information collection, they ask. Why not keep children, especially young children, from using the Internet? We need to allow kids to use the Internet "because the amount of educational material on the Internet outweighs the minor inconvenience of having to monitor what is going on," said Barbara Feldman, who writes a syndicated newspaper column, "Surfing the Net With Kids." [See below to learn how to subscribe to an online version of the column.]

    • I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents'/guardians' work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents'/guardians' permission. I will tell an adult right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable. If my parents/guardians agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my parent or guardian along. I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents/guardians. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents/guardians right away so that they can contact the online service.

    Safeguarding Children
Internet Safety The Internet and e-mail have become one of the most common ways for people to communicate with each other. Many people conduct business, shop, research and do a host of other activities online. However, the anonymous environment of the Internet can be dangerous. The reality of the Internet is that we never really know if the people we are talking to are really who they say they are. To give parents the tools needed to keep their kids safe on the Internet, Attorney General Madigan has created an innovative program regarding the realities of online safety. This program, Project Surf Safe: Navigating the Hidden Dangers of the Internet, is a useful tool in helping parents stay informed about the dangers lurking on the Internet. Please follow the links below to learn more about protecting your family online. Internet Guidelines for Parents and Guardians
    • Place the computer in a common area of the residence rather than a bedroom. This will encourage online time to be a family oriented activity.
    • Become familiar with the people and web sites your children are interacting with on the internet, just as you would get to know all of their other friends.
    • Choose a family oriented Internet Service Provider or Online Service and use Parental Controls or software to regulate the type of information and material your children can access on the Internet. Most of the Parental Controls and software allow adults to restrict access to age appropriate levels. In the event the children do receive objectionable material, teach them to avoid responding to messages that are suggestive, obscene, threatening or makes them feel uncomfortable. Make sure they are comfortable in making you aware of these types of messages. Immediately notify your Internet Service Provider of the receipt of such material.
    • Try to select non-descriptive Account Names and Screen Names for your children. Their online names should not be too specific or identify or describe them in detail.
