Welcome to NetSafe
Nau mai, haere mai... Welcome to NetSafe, the website of the Internet Safety Group of New Zealand (ISG).
  • Chain-letters via text messaging
You've heard about email chain-letters, well now we have chain-letters via text. A particularly nasty and threatening one is now circulating amongst New Zealand children and young people. As with previous cases via email, it is important to explain to children that chain-letters are a hoax, in this case a very cruel one. The best response is to delete the message; don't pass it on. It is also important to remind kids who might treat the text as a 'sick joke' and pass it on, that they themselves are breaking the law sending such offensive material. • New Education about grooming now on NetSafe
Grooming children in chatrooms for sexual abuse is a very serious problem. The ISG has posted new education material on this website that explores the subject of grooming. The ISG applauded the passing of grooming legislation back in April of this year, but now more needs to be done. Education for young people, parents, caregivers, counselors, and even for the offenders themselves, can help reduce the risk for young people who frequent Internet or text chatrooms.

Follow these golden rules for a fun-filled, enjoyable and safe journey inside and outside the internet and our WKN galaxy .
The 10 Golden Rules on Internet Safety
    1. Ask your parents for permission before you log on!
Read the internet safety tips together with your parents, teacher or guardian.Let them know what you are up to on-line. Only use the Internet when your parents have given you permission, and only for the time they allowed you to use it.

    2. Tell your parents to spend time with you while online .
You might want to know some guidelines that your parents are concerned in the use of the computer such as time and the places to go in the World Wide Web. Show them your favorite places in the internet. Tell them about the people you meet on-line, and the things you talk about. Let them know of your keypals and their traditions. Get them involved in your on-line activities!

    3. Post your family's e-mail address even if you have your own!
It's neat to have your own e-mail address but it is always a good idea to post your family's address, and then inform your own address after you are absolutely sure that the sender is trustworthy.

  • Ask your parents to spend time with you while online so that you can show them some of the neat things you can find online.
  • Only use the Internet when your parents tell you it's OK, and only for as long as you are supposed to.
  • Don't give out personal information like your address, telephone number or school name to anyone unless you have permission from your parents.
  • Never meet with a cyberfriend or key pal unless your parents go with you or you have their permission to go alone.
  • Don't respond to any e-mail messages you get if they are strange, mean or upsetting to you, and tell your parents or teachers right away.
  • Don't send pictures of yourself or your family to anyone unless you have permission from your parents.
  • Stop right away if you see or read something on a Web site that upsets you and tell your parents or teachers about it.
  • Don't put words, pictures or sounds on other people's Web sites without their permission.

The Internet can be a wonderful resource for kids. They can use it to researchschool reports, communicate with teachers and other kids,

KidsHealth
Parents Positive Parenting Family Life
The Internet can be a wonderful resource for kids. They can use it to research school reports, communicate with teachers and other kids, and play interactive games. Any child who is old enough to punch in a few letters on the keyboard can literally access the world.
But that access can also pose hazards to your children. For example, your 8-year-old might log on to a search engine and type in the word "Lego." But with just one missed keystroke, he or she might enter the word "Legs" instead, and be directed to thousands of websites with a focus on legs - some of which may contain pornographic material. That's why it's important to be aware of what your children see and hear on the Internet, who they meet, and what they share about themselves online.
Just like any safety issue, it's a good idea to talk with your kids about your concerns, take advantage of resources to protect them from potential dangers, and keep a close eye on their activities.
Internet Safety Laws A federal law has been created to help protect your kids while they are using the Internet. It is designed to keep anyone from obtaining your kids' personal information without you knowing about it and agreeing to it first.
