USAID Rebuilds Lives After the Tsunami
Update - September 14, 2005
Latest News USAID Announces Launch of Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System Program USAID Publication: Tsunami Relief In December 2004, a major earthquake followed by a tsunami hit Asia and Africa, devastating many coastal areas. Almost 200,000 people in eight countries perished in a few hours, and over 100,000 are still missing. Many more had their homes and livelihoods swept away. The coastal areas of Indonesia and Sri Lanka and two Indian island chains bore the brunt of the calamity. They will require significant repair and reconstruction. In response to a Presidential request, Congress appropriated $907.3 million in long term U.S. support to help the tsunami victims rebuild their lives. $656 million was allocated for USAID’s Tsunami Recovery and Reconstruction Fund, with $25 million committed to Avian Flu. USAID's historic commitment to these countries, 40 years of expertise with disaster assistance, and solid working relationships with the region's governments meant we were able to respond immediately, providing life-saving food, water, medical care and shelter.

GERMANY
Introduction Stucture of Schooling Students begin school in Germany by age 6. Elementary and secondary schooling usually comprises 12 or 13 years; for most students, however, only 9 or 10 years are spent as full-time students, with the remaining 2 or 3 years spent part-time in the classroom and part-time in on-the-job training programs.
German education includes three levels: elementary school (grades 1 through 4), lower secondary (grades 5 through 9 or 10), and upper secondary (grades 11 through 13). All students in a given geographic area attend elementary school ( Grundschule ) together, regardless of their ability level. After the fourth year of schooling (at about age 10), students usually enroll in one of three secondary schools:
  • The Hauptschule prepares students for vocational education and generally enrolls those students who are the least academically inclined. Mandatory full-time education ends after the ninth year of schooling (part-time study is mandatory until the age of 18), at which time students receive a certification of

The System of Vocational Education and Its Development - People's Republic of China Source: China Education and Research Network The System The system of vocational education consists of education in vocational schools and vocational training. Vocational education in China is provided at three levels - junior secondary, senior secondary and tertiary. Conducted mainly in junior vocational schools and aimed at training workers, peasants and employees in other sectors with basic professional knowledge and certain professional skills, junior vocational education refers to the vocational and technical education after primary school education and is a part of the 9-year compulsory education. The students in secondary vocational school should be primary school graduates or the youth with equivalent cultural knowledge and its schooling lasts 3 to 4 years. To meet the needs of labor forces for the development of rural economy, junior vocational schools are mainly located in rural areas where the economy is less developed. At present, there are 1,472 such schools with the enrollment of 867,000 students. Vocational education
Vocational education (or Vocational Education and Training (VET)) prepares learners for careers or professions that are traditionally non-academic and directly related to a trade, occupation or 'vocation' in which the learner participates. Vocational education is in most cases a form of secondary or post-secondary education . In some cases, vocational education can contribute towards a tertiary education at a university as academic credit however, it is rarely considered in its own form to fall under the traditional defintion of a higher education Up until the end of the twentieth century, vocational education focused on trades, for example building, agriculture and crafts, and was therefore associated with the activities of lower social classes . As a consequence, it has attracted a level of stigma. However, as the labour market becomes more specialised and economies are demanding more skills, governments and business are increasingly investing in the future of vocational education through publicy funded training organisations and subsidised apprenticeship or traineeship initiatives for businesses.

EDUCATION
  • What is the structure of the educational system in Taiwan? A wide range of educational options is available to ROC citizens. Children in Taiwan can attend preschool in public or private kindergartens. At the age of six, children begin nine years of mandatory education: six years in elementary school and three years in junior high school. Junior high graduates, at 15 years of age, may choose to either enter the work force or transfer to senior high school, senior vocational school, or a five-year college by application, recommendation and selection, or through examination. Senior high school and senior vocational school cover three years. Senior high school is usually the first choice for students planning to enter college or university. Of the 336,893 junior high graduates in school year 1999, 131,629 entered senior high schools, 118,583 went to senior vocational schools, 24,461 studied at supplementary schools, 32,093 went directly into five-year junior colleges (which also cover a student's senior high-school years), and 14,323 attended the Practical Technical Program. Only 4.69 percent of the students who completed their nine years of compulsory education did not continue their schooling. Graduates from junior colleges may continue their education by entering two-year institutes of technology. Senior vocational school graduates may pursue advanced studies in the sciences at either two-year junior colleges or four-year institutes of technology.
