Mission
The Office of Foreign Assets Control ("OFAC") of the US Department of the Treasury administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions based on US foreign policy and national security goals against targeted foreign countries, terrorists, international narcotics traffickers, and those engaged in activities related to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. OFAC acts under Presidential wartime and national emergency powers, as well as authority granted by specific legislation, to impose controls on transactions and freeze foreign assets under US jurisdiction. Many of the sanctions are based on United Nations and other international mandates, are multilateral in scope, and involve close cooperation with allied governments.

Search EUROPA Paris mini-ministerial: European Commission welcomes breakthrough in WTO agriculture talks Also available in: 4 May 2005 - The European Commission welcomes today's significant breakthrough in the agricultural chapter of the Doha Development Agenda negotiations. Meeting in Paris, trade ministers from 30 members of the World Trade Organisation gave their broad backing to a formula for unblocking discussions on market access for agricultural products. The breakthrough followed a European Union proposal for a new formula for calculating so-called AVEs (Ad Valorem Equivalents), the basis on which reductions in import tariffs will be calculated. This will inject new momentum into the agricultural discussions in Geneva and increases the chances of a successful outcome of the WTO Ministerial Meeting in Hong Kong in December. Today's mini-ministerial meeting of the WTO followed an earlier meeting of the so-called Five Interested Parties (EU, US, Australia, Brazil and India), which is dedicated to agricultural issues. The FIPs approved a formula based on a Commission proposal for a new method to convert import tariffs into Ad Valorem Equivalents. These will form the basis of later calculations to cut import tariffs as part of a planned global trade deal. The formula then gained widespread support/was endorsed at the mini-ministerial.

General Agreement on Trade in Services Español Français Opportunities for Developing Countries International Trade Forum - Issue 1/2001 One of the most promising areas in trade for developing countries is services, with new negotiations underway from March 2000. This article, based on the ITC publication, Business Guide to the General Agreement on Trade in Services, provides an overview of this emerging, fast-growing area. International trade rules in this area are still relatively new, and the opportunity to shape them exists. The article also highlights niche areas for developing and transition economies. Until 1995, no multilateral agreement existed for trade in services. This was largely due to a lack of knowledge about services trade itself.
