Modern international law has its roots in the public law of Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries-law that was created to govern the diplomatic, commercial, military, and other relations of the society of Christian States. With the growing penetration of Europe into Asia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, other subjects were included in the community of states, but it was only with the formation of the League of Nations in 1920, in which any state could be a member, that the international system began to aspire to be truly global.

International customary law is defined by the Statute of the International Court of Justice as "general practice accepted as law" by States. In simple terms it is something that states do because they regard themselves as legally obliged to do it.

International norms and regulations provide countries with a means to resolve conflicts without resorting to the use of force. Key international institutions that create, uphold and enforce the rule of law include the United Nations, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court. Researching International Economic Law by Tim Mulligan This guide identifies sources useful for in-depth research in international economic law. "International economic law comprises a broad collection of laws and customary practices that govern economic relations between actors in different nations. It includes the examination of both law and policy issues on multiple levels, including private law, local law, national law, and international law." Stephen Zamora, International Economic Law U. Pa. J. Int'l Econ. L. 63, 63-64 (1996)(footnotes omitted). Given the broad scope of international economic law, this guide emphasizes sources allowing the researcher to delve more deeply into its respective facets. These sources include research guides (both print and electronic) and Web gateways. "Gateways" are Web sites that serve primarily to give researchers access to many other Web sites on one or more subjects. Web-based research guides that offer multiple Web links can also serve as gateways.

LLM in International Law The Programme Edinburgh University has been one of the leading centres for teaching and research in Public International Law since 1707. The LLM in International Law has three objectives. Firstly it provides students from a very diverse range of countries with the opportunity to study the fundamentals of international law and international relations at an advanced level. Secondly it also offers the opportunity to take more specialised courses on issues of contemporary significance that reflect the research interests of members of staff. Lastly, it encourages and supports the development of research skills and seeks to prepare students for a career in international law or international organisations. Students will ideally have a first degree in law or international relations. Previous knowledge of international law is not a prerequisite, but those unfamiliar with the subject are advised to take Fundamental Issues in International Law as one of their options. The Format Students must take three courses. Most taught courses are assessed by two essays; some also have written examinations. Thereafter a 10,000 word supervised dissertation on an approved topic in international law must be submitted by August.
