JOURNAL DESCRIPTIONS
The Stanford Environmental Law Journal (ELJ) was founded in 1978, and is now considered one of the best environmental law journals in the nation. ELJ is a semiannual scholarly periodical dedicated to analyses of current environmental legal issues and policies. Compiled and edited entirely by Stanford Law School students, ELJ publishes articles, and sometimes essays, on timely and important issues in natural resources law, environmental policy, law and economics, international environmental law, and other topics relating to law and the environment. For example, ELJ has covered such topics as hazardous waste, energy development, natural resources conservation and regulation, global warming, and environmental justice. In particular, ELJ seeks to educate regarding the complexities of the natural world as reflected in the law, and to impart an understanding of the environment within the framework of the legal system.

First, it is vehicle for scholarly legal research and commentary. Attention is devoted to special problems of Wisconsin law, where the Law Review can make unique contributions, and to national and international legal problems. Articles are contributed by attorneys, judges, and law professors. Second, it is an educational medium. A substantial portion of each issue contains student research. Whaling and international law
The organizers of this meeting have suggested some topics for brief comment and my remarks center on them.
  • A short evaluation of the International Whaling Commission and its present role in view of international law, the Law of the Sea Treaty, and whaling management in general.
  • Actions Iceland must carry out so that its whaling operations accord with the international law of the sea.
  • Is it possible for Iceland to reenter the IWC with a reservation to the moratorium?
  • Recent IWC decisions and dispute settlement.
Short evaluation of the IWC and its present role in view of international law, the Law of the Sea Treaty, and whaling management in general.
The first and overriding consideration in responding to this question is simply what is the international law for whaling. In my view, under general or customary international law the nationals of all states are entitled to harvest whales on the high seas unless the state of registry or flag has agreed otherwise; each coastal state has control over whales within its national jurisdiction, subject to its international agreements, and it has sole authority over the activities of its nationals on the high seas. I think these propositions accurately state current international law on whaling.

The current trend seems to be that many are looking to the Asian part of the world for great business opportunities because it is a "gold mine" out there. Two places that entrepreneurs are specifically interested in are Singapore and Malaysia. This article discusses the culture and country differences in business of Malaysia and Singapore, and why business ventures in Asia look promising and profitable. The U.S. in general and Arizona in particular have booming real estate development industries, in terms of both revenue and employment. But development activity is not exactly rewarded under the Tax Code. While the sale of property held for investment qualifies for capital gains treatment and is taxed at 15 percent, the sale of property developed by the owner is taxed at much high rates. This article goes on to discuss how the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004 can benefit developers. Posted with permission from the May-June 2005 edition of ARIZONA COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE.

The Baltic Yearbook of International Law joined the family of legal publications in 2001. It is an annual publication containing contributions on topical issues in international law and related fields that are relevant to Baltic affairs and beyond. Each Yearbook focuses on a theme with particular importance to the development of international law. The Yearbook serves as an important source of information not available elsewhere on the practices of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in international law. Despite a clear Baltic ownership, the Yearbook aims at contributing to the development of thought, standard-setting and relevant practices throughout the world. The topical coverage has included the questions surrounding the claims of the Baltic States to their State continuity in international law; related issues of State responsibility; various challenges in international human rights law with focus on bioethics and human rights; and the enlargement of the European Union. Editor in Chief: Ineta Ziemele assisted by the Baltic Editorial Board and an international Advisory Board.
