The International Partnership for Service-Learning and Leadership, in affiliation with The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and its Division of International Special Education and Services (DISES), is pleased to offer cross-cultural programs in 10 nations, combining academic study for credit with internships in programs for individuals with disabilities. Most of these programs follow the same program design as the IPSL undergraduate programs, which include academic study, living in a homestay with a local family or on a campus with international students, and serving 15-20 hours a week in established service agency. With the Special Eduation focus, your service will be in the form of an internship serving individuals with special needs, supervised by professionals; and your academic studies will focus on the culture in which you are living and the issues of children and adults with special needs. Internship opportunities include serving in schools, residential settings, clinics, sheltered workshops, and other programs for children and adults with a variety of special needs such as:

Special Needs Education "Educational intervention and support designed to address special education needs.
''The term ‘special needs education’ has come into use as a replacement for the term ‘special education’. The older term was mainly understood to refer to the education of children with disabilities that takes place in special schools or institutions distinct from, and outside of, the institutions of the regular school and university system. In many countries today a large proportion of disabled children are in fact educated in institutions of the regular system.
Moreover, the concept of ‘children with special educational needs’ extends beyond those who may be included in handicapped categories to cover those who are failing in school for a wide variety of other reasons that are known to be likely to impede a child’s optimal progress. Whether or not this more broadly defined group of children are in need of additional support depends on the extent to which schools need to adapt their curriculum, teaching and organization and/or to provide additional human or material resources so as to stimulate efficient and effective learning for these pupils.''

http://www.eenet.org.uk/about/evolutn.shtml
About EENET
Creating conversations:
The Evolution of the Enabling Education Network (EENET)
History of EENET
The Enabling Education Network (EENET) has been set up to establish an information-sharing network aimed at supporting and promoting the inclusion of marginalised groups in education world wide. Although membership is open to individuals and organisations in all countries of the world, EENET gives priority to the needs of countries in the South. In this paper I summarise what has been achieved so far. The vast majority of EENET's members are concerned with inclusive education as it relates to disabled children. However EENET has deliberately defined its objectives as broadly as possible in order to include all issues of difference and discrimination, such as race, gender and poverty. Most large organisations have an adviser or expert on one or other of these issues, yet only rarely are their commonalities explored. Sadly, awareness training in any one of the issues does not guarantee awareness in all the issues, so, for example, a person may be race and gender aware, but completely disability-unaware (Stubbs 1995). EENET will encourage a more holistic view of disability in order to promote a fuller understanding of exclusion in its widest sense. In this way incl usive education dovetails with the school improvement and effectiveness movement to provide a better educational environment for all.

Welcome to my site – I hope you find it helpful. If this is your first visit, click here for a guide to the site. This site is named after the book Uniquely Gifted: Identifying and Meeting the Needs of the Twice-Exceptional Student , edited by Kiesa Kay. Twice-exceptional children (that is, intellectually gifted children with special needs such as AD/HD, learning disabilities, Asperger Syndrome, etc.) have a hard time of it in our education system - because their giftedness can mask their special needs and their special needs hide their giftedness, they are often labeled as "lazy", "unmotivated", "not trying". Many people don't even realize that a child can be both gifted and learning disabled; however, Linda Silverman, Ph.D., the director of the Gifted Development Center has found that fully 1/6 of the gifted children tested at the GDC have a learning difference of some type In addition to being special needs educational advisor for families with twice-exceptional children and Contributing Editor to the new publication 2e: Twice-Exceptional Newsletter , I am co-founder and co-listowner of the

on special needs education
by Staff Writer, DPI - Phillippines (KAMPI) KAMPI or DPI-Philippines has embarked this year on an ambitious project to facilitate the training of 400 regular public school teachers on special needs education so that more children with disabilities can be accepted in regular schools. DPI-Philippines president Venus Hagan said that while the number of disabled children of school age continue to increase, there are very few teachers trained by government to cater to the special educational needs of these children. Data gathered by KAMPI shows that as of 1999, there are 3.6 million disabled children in the Philippines from birth to 18 years old. Not even two percent of them receive any form of pre-school training or education. "If we just wait for government authorities to pursue efforts along these lines, it will take ages for the Philippines public to realize the goal of educating children with disabilities." "These children are growing. Their need to be educated can no longer wait. We can't afford to be mere passive spectators while disabled children's right to a full cycle of basic education continues to be violated and neglected by the very authorities mandated to ensure their education. We, the leaders of KAMPI then decided that we should do something about the situation," Hagan explained.

This is the law that guides how schools deliver special education and related services to students with disabilities. You will be reading about the IDEA in this publication. This note is to alert you that, while much of the law remains essentially the same, some aspects have changed as a result of the amendments just passed in June, 1997. Bear this in mind as you read about the IDEA in this publication. NICHCY prides itself on providing accurate, up-to-date information on disability issues, so we are working hard to update all of our publications to reflect the newest version of the law. Please bear with us while we tackle this enormous job! If you have questions about the new amendments, please feel free to contact NICHCY.

Disability Action Plan 2000-2002
Introduction
This Action Plan covers the 3 year period from 2000 to 2002
Plan Development
Potential service and facilities enhancements have been identified for action by reviewing existing services against priority areas for action in the Government's Disability Policy Framework. Comments from clients and other interested groups will be assessed for improvements to the Plan. It is intended that this process be ongoing and that adjustments to the Plan occur as necessary to keep it relevant to staff and client need. Progress against the Plan will be reviewed annually as part of the Office's strategic and operational planning review process. This will be a function of the Office's Planning and Development Branch. Progress will be reported in the Office's Annual Report to Parliament, a copy of which will be provided to the Ageing and Disability Department. The Plan will be updated every three years. The Office's Plan comprises two parts Part 1 Introduction including the Board of Studies and the Office's context and role.
