Page 1 Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth
was the most important figure Alabama Civil Rights Movement. In the 1950s, he was pastor of Bethel Baptist Church located some distance from downtown. In response to Alabama outlawing the NAACP within the state, he sidetracked the law by forming the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR), which gave the Civil Rights Movement a legal foundation in Alabama. Shortly after the Montgomery Bus Boycott ended successfully in 1957, Rev. Shuttlesworth invited Rev. Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. to Birmingham to become the "Voice of the Civil Rights Movement." Reverends Fred Shuttlesworth, Martin Luther King, Jr., AD King (Martin’s brother), Ralph D Abernathy, Wyatt T Walker, Andrew Young and others forged Project C for "Confrontation" at meetings held in their churches and AG Gaston Motel. By 1960 Birmingham became Ground Zero for Confrontation in the Civil Rights Movement when a plummeting steel market and job loss played right into the hands of evildoers. The KKK galvanized poor Whites against African Americans and Jewish Americans, while Birmingham’s other citizens stood by as churches and homes in the Black and Jewish communities were bombed. Birmingham had so many church bombings from 1957-1964 that it had a well-earned nickname, "Bombingham" Definitely not the marketing slogan you want for a city.

(htm) Civil rights groups warn of grave dangers in international biometric passport system 29th March 2004, Embargo: 22.00 hrs GMT, 29th March 2004 The letter, spearheaded by Privacy International and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) raises concerns about little-known plans to imminently create international standards that will require the use of biometrics and RFID (radio frequency) technology in all future passports. The measures, being decided this week at a meeting of the ICAO in Cairo, will result in a distributed international identification database on all passport holders. The open letter has been signed by, among others, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Statewatch, the UK based Foundation for Information Policy Research, the Association for Progressive Communications and the US based Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. The ICAO has agreed that the initial international biometric standard for passports will be facial mapping. Adequate memory space in newly issued passports will be reserved for additional biometrics such as fingerprinting at the discretion of every government. The EU is already calling for fingerprints to be included, along with an associated European register of all biometrics. National authorities will store and share these vast data reserves.

Denial Of Rights: Amend the USA PATRIOT Act Now!
An Amnesty International Fact Sheet
Amnesty International is concerned that the USA PATRIOT Act undermines the human rights of Americans and non-citizens, and weakens the framework for promoting human rights internationally. Combined with other post-September 11 domestic security policies, the USA PATRIOT Act becomes even more potent in its ability to erode basic civil and human rights. Even in times of crisis, it is important to preserve constitutional freedoms and human rights. In particular, the USA PATRIOT Act threatens the rights protected in the US Constitution and international documents, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the Convention against Torture, and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
Amnesty International is concerned that the USA PATRIOT Act:
  • Creates a broad definition of "domestic terrorism" that may have a chilling effect on the US and international rights to free expression and association.

Race and the Image of American Democracy

Shocking as this sentence was, it was overturned only after intense international attention and the interference of an embarrassed John Foster Dulles. Soon after the United States' segregated military defeated a racist regime in World War II, American racism was a major concern of U.S. allies, a chief Soviet propaganda theme, and an obstacle to American Cold War goals throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Each lynching harmed foreign relations, and "the Negro problem" became a central issue in every administration from Truman to Johnson. In what may be the best analysis of how international relations affected any domestic issue, Mary Dudziak interprets postwar civil rights as a Cold War feature. She argues that the Cold War helped facilitate key social reforms, including desegregation. Civil rights activists gained tremendous advantage as the government sought to polish its international image. But improving the nation's reputation did not always require real change. This focus on image rather than substancecombined with constraints on McCarthy-era political activism and the triumph of law-and-order rhetoriclimited the nature and extent of progress.

George Radwanski's Concerns Justified Says Civil Liberties Coalition OTTAWA - Members of a national coalition set up to monitor the application of Canada's anti-terrorism legislation applaud the annual report tabled yesterday in Parliament by Privacy Commissioner George Radwanski. The International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG) shares the concerns expressed by the Commissioner that the privacy rights guaranteed by the Canadian Charters of Rights are being seriously eroded by the web of anti-terrorism legislation adopted by Parliament since September 2001, or about to be adopted in coming months. "The Privacy Commissioner has performed a service for all of us, citizens and legislators, by focusing attention on the impact of Bill C-17 and related initiatives, on existing human and civil rights protections" says Gerry Barr, co-Chair of the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG) and President/CEO of the Canadian Council for International Co-operation. "Like Mr. Radwanski, we are concerned that measures adopted to protect Canadians are being used as an excuse to increase the surveillance powers of police and of the state for purposes other than the fight against terrorism, and constitute a violation of basic freedoms under the Charter of Rights".

The 18-member expert Committee of the General Assembly, which monitors compliance with the 1966 human rights Covenant, will send a letter to the Sudanese authorities requesting that they address their next report to six articles of the 40-article Covenant, namely articles 6, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 26. Those articles deal respectively with: right to life; torture; slavery; right to liberty and security of persons; freedom of movement; and equal legal protection.
