Latest update: December 2001 Introduction The European Union respects and promotes the universal principles as laid down in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and its complementary International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights . The Union’s activities are also based on the main international and regional instruments for the protection of human rights, including the European Convention on Human Rights . These instruments enshrine common values regarding fundamental freedoms and democratic principles, which are universal, indivisible and interdependent. Respect for these values is a condition for efficient development in any society. Other important sources with regard to defining the priorities of the EU are the declaration and the programme of action of the World Conference on Human Rights (Vienna, 1993), the declarations of the International Conference on Population and Development (Cairo, 1994), of the World Summit for Social Development (Copenhagen, 1995) and of the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing 1995).

Provincial codes provided for several rights of the kind protected by the U.S. Bill of Rights, but they did not apply throughout Canada and were far from complete. After World War II, a political movement in Canada championed a Canadian Bill of Rights, and in the 1950s the

BACK TO MAIN ONLINE BOOKSTORE HOW TO ORDER JOINT STATEMENT OF NGOs AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS INTERNATIONAL CIVIL SOCIETY REJECTS WTO DOHA OUTCOME AND THE WTO’S MANIPULATIVE PROCESS International civil society represented by the undersigned organisations, having assessed the process and outcome of the WTO Ministerial Conference in Doha, reject the legitimacy of the Doha Ministerial Declaration as the result of an outrageous process of manipulation that is totally unacceptable for an international organisation. “EVERYTHING BUT DEVELOPMENT” OUTCOME The results of Doha have been shamelessly touted by developed countries and the Secretariat as a “development agenda” or a “development Round”. In our view, nothing could be further from the truth. Indeed, the Doha Declaration and its work programme can best be called “Everything But Development.”   It is a development disaster. The Declaration has committed the WTO to negotiate agreements on the four “Singapore Issues” (investment, competition, transparency in government procurement, trade facilitation) after the 5 th Ministerial - despite the opposition of a large number of developing countries and thousands of NGOs and social movements worldwide. By advancing the march of these topics into the WTO system, Doha has brought nearer a development disaster of great proportions as the proposed new agreements would close off many development policies and possibilities and result in re-colonisation and unprecedented powers to global corporations at the expense of sovereignty and people’s rights and needs.

"I am a professional optimist", Ralph Bunche told journalists at Nicosia International Airport at the conclusion of a visit in July 1966 to view the peacekeeping operations in Cyprus. "If I were not a professional optimist through 21 years in the United Nations service, mainly in conflict areasPalestine, Congo, here and in KashmirI would be crazy. You have to be optimistic in this work or get out of it.... That is, optimistic in the sense of assuming that there is no problemCyprus or any otherwhich cannot be solved, and that, therefore, you have to keep at it persistently and you have to have confidence that it can be solved." (1) Widely hailed, among his many accomplishments, as a great international civil servant, American and citizen of the world, Ralph Johnson Bunche's life story is one full of inspiration to all engaged in the pursuit of peace. As a year-long programme marking the 100th anniversary of his birth in Detroit, Michigan, commences to celebrate and build upon the legacy of this diplomat, scholar and internationalist, it is timely for the current staff of the United Nations, to which Ralph Bunche devoted 25 years of his spectacular career, to reflect on one of its most famous and optimistic alumni. A visible reminder of the esteem with which he is regarded within the United Nations and the City of New York is the Ralph Bunche Park located directly opposite the UN Secretariat building.

INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS OBSERVATION EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Conclusions to the work of observation carried out by the International Civil Commission for human rights observation
(translation by the Irish Mexico Group) After ordering and analysing the information gathered, the Commission notes that the human rights situation in the Mexican state of Chiapas is deteriorating gravely. The State of Chiapas is currently suffering the consequences of a situation of profound political upheaval and of worrying social breakdown. It is perceived that institutional structures at all levels are incapable of enforcing the rule of law, and that Chiapan society, and especially the indigenous communities, suffers the consequences of a general situation of violence and impunity. The factors which contribute in greatest measure to this situation are the following:
    1. The intense militarization of the area.
    2. The presence of paramilitary death squads.
    3. The situation of generalized impunity.
    4. The obstacles impeding recourse to justice.

The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People this morning approved the work programme of the United Nations International Conference of Civil Society in Support of the Palestinian People, scheduled for New York on 23 and 24 September 2002. In further action, it approved the applications of 41 civil society organizations active in support of Palestinian rights all over the world for accreditation to the Committee. Reports by Chairman PAPA LOUIS FALL ( Senegal He said the ensuing panel presentations and discussions helped to identify more clearly the destructive impact of the ongoing Israeli offensive on the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority, to appreciate the challenges at hand and, in that light, to evaluate current efforts at peacemaking.  The participants strongly reaffirmed the solidarity of the governments and peoples of Africa with the plight of the Palestinian people, their support for the resumption of political negotiations leading to a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestine question and the realization of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

    IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 27, 2001 Mayors Express Sadness at Passing of International Civil Rights Crusader Leon Sullivan
The Reverend Leon Sullivan, a pioneering civil rights crusader credited with helping end South Africa's system of apartheid, died April 25 at age 78, of leukemia according to his family. Conference Immediate Past President and Denver Mayor Wellington E. Webb remembered the Reverend Leon Sullivan as a man of peace, action and determination in his quest for equal rights for African Americans and in his battle against African apartheid. "Rev. Sullivan was an inspiration to so many of us who shared in the struggle for equal rights and we are both blessed to have known Rev. Sullivan," Mayor Webb and his wife, Mrs. Wilma J. Webb, said in a prepared statement. "His unwavering spirit to promote nonviolent social and economic change lasted throughout his life and made a tremendous impact both nationally and internationally. He will be greatly missed, but his amazing accomplishments throughout his life will endure and inspire for centuries to come." Mayor Webb attended the Fifth African-African American Summit convened by Rev. Sullivan in May 1999 in Ghana, West Africa, where the Mayor delivered a major policy address to the Summit delegates. Mayor Webb's address was the capstone in an historic U. S. Conference of Mayors' "Mayoral Mission to Africa" to Dakar, Senegal, and Accra, Ghana.
