International Civil Rights Walk of Fame
All journeys begin with a single footstep. The Civil Rights Movement was successful because individuals put a foot forward and diligently worked for equality. On September 14, 2004, a new, permanent exhibit which shows the footprints of important civil rights advocates will be unveiled at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, Georgia. The exhibit is called the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame and has the cemented footprints of Ralph David Abernathy, President Jimmy Carter, Thurgood Marshall, Medgar Evers, Rosa Parks, and many more. Six hundred spaces have been reserved for current and future footprints.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Atlanta, GA (8-18-2004). How can one stand in the footsteps of civil rights icons such as President Jimmy Carter, Congressman John Lewis, Justice Thurgood Marshall and Rosa Parks? This impossible feat can be accomplished when the footprints of these, and many other, noted civil rights leaders are embedded in cement at the Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic site. The unveiling of this permanent tribute will take place on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the National Historic Site located at 450 Auburn Avenue (Atlanta, GA). The International Civil Rights Walk of Fame was created to pay homage to the brave warriors of justice who sacrificed and struggled to make equality a reality for all and is expected to enhance the historic value of the area, enrich cultural heritage, and augment tourist attractions. The shoes used to create the footsteps will also be on display during the unveiling program. The “Walk of Fame” is the brain child of Xernona Clayton, founder and executive producer of the renowned Trumpet Awards and a civil rights “shero” in her own right. Ms. Clayton says, “This will be a lasting memorial to those whose contributions were testaments to the fact that human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable.”
