SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands - By jogging at sunset on the white sands of a palm-fringed beach here, 17-year-old Audrey O. Bricia is doing more than toning up for her next try in this island's Miss Philippines contest. She is getting in shape for United States Army boot camp. To gain an edge on the competition for enlistment, she reserved a seat two days in advance to take Army's aptitude test on a recent Saturday morning here. Safely ensconced in her seat, she watched an Army recruiter turn away 10 latecomers, all new high school graduates.

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Interior, Department of the , executive department of the United States government, established by Congress in 1849. The department is headed by a secretary appointed by the president with the approval of the Senate. During its long existence, the department's function has changed from that of performing housekeeping duties for the government to its present role as custodian of natural resources. As the nation's principal conservation agency, the department has the responsibility of protecting and conserving the country's land, water, minerals, fish, and wildlife; of promoting the wise use of all these natural resources; of maintaining national parks and recreation areas; and of preserving historic places. It also provides for the welfare of Native American reservation communities and of inhabitants of island territories under U.S. administration. II

The Honorable Louis Caldera

Washington, D.C. 20310-0101 Dear Mr. Caldera, This letter provides the Department of Interior's (DOI) final determination and resolution of the issues delegated to DOI by the Department of the Army (DOA) in a March 1998 interagency agreement. In this agreement, DOI agreed to make the following two determinations related to the set of human skeletal remains recovered on July 26, 1996, from Columbia Park, land controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), near the city of Kennewick, Benton County, Washington: 1) whether these human remains meet the definition for "Native American" within the meaning of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA); and, if so, 2) the appropriate disposition of the remains under the terms of the statute and its implementing regulations at 43 C.F.R. Part 10. In January 2000, DOI released its finding that the remains are considered Native American under the statute and regulations. The attached "Memorandum to the Assistant Secretary, Fish Wildlife and Parks" provides the background for this decision. (See

Interior's security weaknesses not unique: NBC vulnerable to attack
(January 17, 2002) A second Internet security expert testified on Monday that he was able to hack into the Interior Department's computer systems, obtain personal information Secretary Gale Norton and exploit other vulnerabilities that led him to "personal data on all the astronauts." Phil Brass and his firm Internet Security Systems ( http://www.iss.net ) were hired by Interior's Inspector General to test the department's computer network. One Bush administration official has described the system as "bulletproof." But Brass described a far different situation in testimony he gave in the Cobell v. Norton evidentiary hearing. He explained how he purposely looked for sensitive information about Norton and other top officials to show the department that its systems were vulnerable to hackers despite an investment of $100 million. "We were able to retrieve credentials to many systems," Brass told the court.
