Interior Department's top lawyer takes aim at environmental laws
ASSOCIATED PRESS By SCOTT SONNER Associated Press Writer WINNEMUCCA, Nev.- The Interior Department wants to make it easier to exempt from environmental reviews any activities that it sees as having insignificant effect on public lands, the agency's top lawyer said. The Bush administration also is determined to halt the use of the Endangered Species Act as a "zoning tool" on federal lands, said William Myers, the department's solicitor general. "It has gotten to the point where you can hardly dig a post hole without having to do an environmental analysis," Myers said in a speech Thursday to about 100 members of the Nevada Cattlemen's Association, who welcomed his criticism of what they regard as onerous conservation measures. The cattlemen are among those critical of grazing reforms adopted under the Clinton administration, which they claim are aimed at driving sheep and cattle off public lands in the West. "Bill's our friend. It's been a long time since we had a friend in the solicitor's office," said John Falen, a rancher from Orovada and the group's past president.

... Main August 10, 2005 Dan Snyder Tried to Bribe Interior Department Sure, he owns the Redskins, which means he's richer than God. Sure, he can fire players and coaches like it was nothing. But getting rid of some pesky trees? Not so easy for Dan Snyder, Washington's richest dumbass: Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder offered to pay the National Park Service $25,000 nearly four years ago in exchange for permission to remove trees behind his Potomac estate, according to Interior Department documents released this week. The Post managed to get ahold of Interior Department docs this week that shows that Dan Snyder offered the Perk service $25k plus a "general donation" which would be "unrelated" to his property four years ago. What he really meant was, I'll give you 25 grand, plus Patrick Ramsey's sire fees. Of course, he did get to cut those trees down last Fall, which sparked controversy across the city. Apparently, however, the problem was that 25 grand just wasn't enough money. Snyder's lawyers and publicists, who I'm betting should be fired, given his rep in this town, say that it's cost Dan near a hundred grand to do it instead. All because Dan wanted to see the river.

Whistleblower Intimidation by Interior Department
Federal Computer Week seemed to be just about the only outlet to cover the latest outrageous behavior by the federal government as it pursues a futile attempt to defend itself in Cobell v. Norton , the litigation exposing how the federal government mismanaged billions of dollars in trust funds on behalf of Native Americans. Most recently, the Chief Information Office of the Bureau of Land Management was threatened by higher ups right before taking the stand as a witness in the case According to a motion filed with the court : “Moments before Ms. Levine took the stand for her final day of testimony, she was told that she would be removed as bureau CIO and transferred to a non-information technology position in a bureau office that is targeted for closure….Under oath, Ms. Levine confirmed the chilling effect such retaliation had had on her forthcoming testimony and her fear of further retaliation. The message was delivered with absolute clarity: if you testify truthfully, you will be punished.” According to

Interior Department to cut California's Colorado River water
The Colorado River winds through the Chocolate Mountains in eastern Imperial County near Brawley, California. Story Tools
SAN DIEGO, California (AP) California's share of water from the Colorado River will be cut next year to ensure allocations for six other Western states, the Interior Department said Friday. The amount would be enough to supply roughly 1.4 million people a year, and represents 13 percent of the water California has been taking from the river. However, many communities draw water from other sources, and officials in Los Angeles and San Diego, where the cuts would fall hardest, say they have reserves to last at least two years. Interior Secretary Gale Norton warned of a cutback earlier this month after the collapse of a long-term deal aimed at curbing California's historic overuse of the river. The state can avoid the cutback if Southern California water agencies resurrect a 75-year deal to transfer Colorado water from desert farms to cities by December 31. The water-sharing deal collapsed December 9 when the Imperial Valley refused to sell any of its massive share of Colorado water to coastal cities.

(Joint Release: DNR / Congressman Norm Dicks) Interior Department grant funds Hoh River project WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of the Interior has approved a grant of $3.7 million to purchase 1,755 acres of privately owned lands along the Hoh River as part of a strategy to preserve critical habitat for salmon, bull trout, murrelets, owls and other threatened and endangered species on the Olympic Peninsula, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks and Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands Doug Sutherland said Wednesday. The grant will assist a large-scale public and private partnership effort that will preserve the wildlife habitat along the entire length of the ecologically-significant river. The federal funding announced today adds to another $3 million that was awarded for the Hoh River Conservation Corridor project last year. It was approved by Interior Secretary Gale Norton as part of the department’s $70 million nationwide effort to assist states in improving habitat for threatened and endangered fish, wildlife and plant species. The Conservation Corridor project has also attracted a substantial amount of private sector support, coordinated by the Western Rivers Conservancy through the Hoh River Trust, a non-profit organization created to manage the lands acquired for the benefit of fish and wildlife.
