Lessons from the Library
April is School Library Media Month, a great time to reexamine your students' library know-how! Do your students know diddly about Dewey? Do they believe that "biography" is a television show? Do they think call numbers belong in a telephone's memory? Are your students convinced that a "librarian" is a person born under the sign of Libra? If so, it's time to reel them in and get them reacquainted with reading, researching, and the library! Included: Five fun lessons to reinforce library skills! During your April observance of School Library Media Month, celebrate with lessons that encourage your students to rediscover the wealth of knowledge found in your school's library! Library skills can often get lost among the rigors of any curriculum, but these are the skills needed to complete tasks adults face every day finding information, summing it up, internalizing it, and sharing it. This month, schedule a visit to the library in person or online to sharpen your students' research skills!
FIVE LESSONS TO TEACH LIBRARY AND RESEARCH SKILLS

72. Peace Corps | World Wise Schools | Lesson Plans
Create lessons and units that are interdisciplinary, follow a theme, and areeducationally too, can include global education in their lesson plans.
http://www.peacecorps.gov/wws/lessons/earthday.html
Earth Day for Global Educators
Create lessons and units that are interdisciplinary, follow a theme, and are educationally sound—a challenge for any teacher! Such lessons take time and effort and are bound by the constraints of the required curriculum. Often global education issues are relegated to a "catch as catch can" status in these creative efforts. Interdisciplinary units often use month long celebrations of cultural pride and special event days as the theme material. Earth Day has gained a prominent focus for schools in the United States and students around the world. Earth Day and the study of the environment is a perfect way to include Coverdell World Wise Schools (CWWS) global education materials in interdisciplinary lessons. CWWS has many activities in the Destination study guides that address environmental issues and include the study of a particular country, its culture and geography. Social studies teachers who are presenting the study of a particular region of the world can use one of the countries from that region to illustrate the environment and environmental issues. Those who are studying the United States might want to choose an environmental concern abroad that can be compared and contrasted to an environmental concern in the US. Reading and language teachers will find source materials in the guides, and there are some lessons which lend themselves to graphing and data analysis for the mathematicians. It goes without saying that science teachers have a bonanza in these activity suggestions so they, too, can include global education in their lesson plans.
