The authors have examined decades of research to determine what teaching strategies have positive effects on student learning. These strategies are not new, but when teachers use these strategies effectively with their students, the outcome is a measurable difference in student achievement. Each of these strategies can be used by any teacher at any time, using either traditional teaching tools or using technology. This site provides ideas for using technology. As technology continues to advance, options to utilize it in elementary classrooms continue to grow. Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania Elementary Education Department encourages teacher candidates to utilize technology in their elementary education program and student teaching experiences. Student teachers use technology to locate appropriate resources and materials, research content, and to create lesson plans. They use technology for communication with parents and colleagues, and they use it to search for employment. Also, we will present ways in which student teachers use technology in today’s elementary classrooms and schools to enhance their lessons. Additionally, we will discuss how technology is used in teacher preparation.

Integrating Technology into Instruction in an Inclusive Classroom for Diverse Learners
    Joy F. Xin
    Rowan University, U.S. A.
Abstract Three instructional strategies: team teaching, cooperative learning, and computer assisted instruction, were combined and implemented in an inclusive 3rd grade classroom. Students worked in cooperative learning groups in class and in pairs on the computers. A regular education and a special education teacher engaged in team teaching. Three commercially produced computer software packages covering computation and problem solving were utilized. The article demonstrates how special and regular education students can acquire mathematics skills together successfully when the strategies are research based, motivating, and effectively accommodate diversity. Integrating Technology into Instruction in an Inclusive Classroom for Diverse Learners Simultaneously, teachers are being asked to implement new curriculum standards and to strive for higher achievement and improve academic outcomes for all their students. For many educators the trend toward inclusion in particular seems to undermine these goals. No wonder so many teachers express dismay when the topic of inclusion arises. What is the answer to the educators' dilemma? The literature indicates that since the average classroom is becoming increasingly diverse with or without inclusion of students with disabilities, it is incumbent upon every teacher to implement a variety of instructional strategies that have been shown to be highly effective in inclusive classrooms.

The practicum semester is a time for student teachers to really become immersed in the workings of schools. When you think about the schools that you will be entering upon graduating from BC, consider that schools across the U.S. are being profoundly impacted by two significant factors:
  • a shift in learning objectives to "21st century knowledge a! nd skills"directing one's own learning, working collaboratively, and solving complex problems requiring multiple kinds of expertise, and
new technological mediums, such as networked technologies, multimedia, and simulations.
  • Modern information and communications technologies are helping to transform many schools into learning centers that provide rich, engaging, and collaborative environments for teaching and learning.
Thinking about learning and teaching with technology is also important because a growing number of school districts now expect that new teachers will enter classrooms prepared to use technology with K-12 students. This is what Irwin Blumer, former Superintendent of Newton Schools, had to say about what the Newton School District was looking for in their new teachers:
"It has reached the point where no matter how good prospective teachers are in any other area, beginning teachers need to know technology AND need to be able to demonstrate comfort and proficiency with technology. They need to show that they know the basics of technology. To be considered for a teaching position, a candidate would need to demonstrate proficiency in e-mail, word processing, database management, spreadsheets, and the use of the Internet. I would expect teachers to show that they were able to use these tools to influence instruction. I would also expect the teacher to have a portfolio which demonstrates how technology was used in his/her teaching. I can't imagine anyone hiring a teacher unless they could demonstrate that ! level of competency in technology."

    Technology in the Classroom
The School of Education at Sonoma State University was awarded a $148,000 U.S. Department of Education grant for the project, Building the Digital Bridge. The goal of the project is to improve the education of teacher candidates at SSU by integrating technology into the teacher education course curriculum. Burke Cochran, School of Education faculty member, maintains that the goal of the project is to "infuse" technology into the teaching and learning experience of teacher candidates. "We hope to generate a university-wide design of technology integration for all our education students and increase the technology skills of our faculty." The funding for Building the Digital Bridge is for one year to "develop capacity for change" that includes the development of faculty technology skills, integrating technology standards into Education courses, and the training of 105 K-12 teachers in Vallejo and Ukiah who will mentor teacher candidates. As part of the project, The Institute of Computer Technology has designed three web-based courses for the Vallejo and Ukiah teachers: The Internet for Educators, Integrating Technology into the K-12 Classroom, and Using Computers as Instructional and Student Learning Tools. These courses will help to build a corps of exemplary teachers who are mastering the use of technology for classroom teaching.

    Integrating Technology into the Classroom
Technology integration is the combination of technology with all areas of curriculum to enhance learning and help meet standards and desired learning outcomes. The curriculum should drive the technology, not the other way around. Constructivist learning theory is well suited to technology integration. Students become involved in learning activities that require them to gather, analyze, and use information. Teachers become facilitators of learning, guiding and assisting students rather than lecturing. Consider:
    • What can teachers do to improve student learning? How can technologies help teachers accomplish these things? What do teachers need to know about technologies in order to use them well? How will you know if it's made a difference?
    ASSURE Model
  • Analyze the learner (their current skills, learning styles, age) State purpose and learning goals/objectives (what performance do you want students to demonstrate at the end of instruction) Select appropriate media and materials (decide the method of instruction, the media format, and select or design the materials)
