And now you're expected to use it! Great! Just one more thing we have to teach! Is the time, effort, and money really worth it? Do I believe that this will help my students become more successful learners? Here is an exceptional web resource site that has posted studies which answers these questions. The Impact of Technology , has pulled extensive resources from all over the Internet and shows that technology does have an impact on student learning. If integrating technology into the curriculum helps students, how do we do it? Here are four management tips for using computers within the classroom:
Four Management Tips
  • A centers' approach to teaching offers the most success for integrating the computer within a lesson. Students not only have assigned computer time, but various learning styles are addressed. The other half of the student's time is spent doing hands-on or collaborative activities as well as computer assignments that correlate with the activities being taught in the group with the teacher.

Gadsden Middle School is wired, ready, and waiting. The school's principal and district administrators are dedicated to getting teachers to use technology, many of the classrooms have computers, and technology and curriculum teams are in place. However, like many rural schools, this Anthony, NM school is awaiting e-rate funding and support from local telecommunications companies. Until then, the school has no Internet access. It is one thing to put a computer in every classroom and quite another to bring the world to the classroom through technology. Gadsden's situation is an example of one of the many challenges that schools and districts face once they decide to bring technology into the classroom. The first challenges schools and districts encounter are most likely those related to facilities planning. The facilities issues may range from inadequate electrical wiring and outlets, to wiring for networks, to having sufficient space for a computer lab, or making room for one or more computers in a 700-square-foot classroom already crowded with 22 students.

SEDL has long recognized the need for educators to evaluate, acquire, and manage the technologies that support school improvement efforts and NCLB requirements. We were also among the first to develop training to help teachers integrate technology with learner-centered instruction. SEDL's Evaluation Services (ES) works to enhance clients' ability to achieve their program goals and to ensure that clients' programs, products, and services are of the highest quality. ES has evaluated a variety of programs, including the implementation of arts and mathematics curricula, statewide teacher professional development, and the use of technology in the classroom. Disability Law Resource Project (DLRP) helps make information technology available to students with disabilities. DLRP also promotes promising technology practices in schools throughout the region.
