Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

About the Program
The aim of the IPM program is to teach New Hampshire farmers to handle pest problems while
  • reducing growers' use of chemical pesticides, minimizing crop production costs, and maintaining crop quality and yield. Insects, pathogens, weeds and other pests are a constant threat for NH farmers and greenhouse operators.
  • For many crops, the marketplace tolerates very little or no pest injury. Since 1945, chemical pesticides have offered easy solutions to pest problems, and growers have over-used them, with resultant higher costs and potential environmental harm or health risks. Reducing this over-use of pesticides can improve farm profitability and also improve long term sustainability of farming in NH.
Commodities: Greenhouse crops, apples, and sweet corn have been the standard commodities since 1993. We added 3 new programs (field corn, strawberries, and fly control around animals) in 1996. We terminated (passed on to growers) sweet corn work in 1996, and piloted work in bedding plants in 1997.

Miller Professor Weslaco, Texas G. Cuperus Professor Oklahoma State University Department of Entomology Stillwater, Oklahoma J. Anciso Extension Agent Edinburg, Texas Introduction Cucurbits are an important part of the fresh market vegetable crops in the USA comprising approximately 9% of all fresh vegetable shipments in 1992 (USDA Agricultural Statistics 1993). Cucurbit fruit such as pickling cucumber, pumpkin, and squash, are also important processed or frozen commodities. Watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, cucumber, squash, and pumpkin are grown throughout the south central region of the U.S. from south Texas through Oklahoma. It is estimated that over 100,000 acres for the crop complex as a whole are produced in Texas and Oklahoma. The fruit is primarily channeled through the fresh market and through processors for pickles and frozen goods. The pest complex attacking these crops in these areas can result in severe yield losses. Consumer demands for unblemished produce in the fresh market coupled with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations for the processor market dictate that cucurbit fruit be blemish free and of standard size and color. Because of this, pesticide usage has remained high for these crops and adoption of integrated pest management (IPM) practices slow because of the perceived risks to production.

    Overview
Research is conducted to develop efficient, cost-effective strategies and procedures for the management of insect pests without relying on chemical pesticides. Researchers develop insect management methods for greenhouse crops, field vegetable and berry crops. A variety of management methods are investigated: biological control methods using the natural enemies of insects to control pest populations are developed; rearing methods for biological controls are established for commercial production of control insects; mating disruption methods are investigated and artificial pheromones developed to reduce total populations of insect pests in fields; mechanical controls and other management methods which allow reduced amounts of chemicals for pest control are also developed; sampling methods for pest and beneficial insects are developed and validated for use by growers and pest managers; and beneficial insects are studied in nature to enhance the understanding and knowledge of the natural processes involved in insect population control and balance. Geographic information systems provide current information on pest populations and movements. In addition, chemical controls for short-term use or for use on small-production crops are also investigated and applications made through the User Requested Minor Use Label Expansion program for approval by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency.

    Objective
To develop novel pest management strategies that exploit natural enemies, and integrate natural enemy biodiversity with crop varieties, cultural practices and judicious use of pesticides. Canola, corn, wheat and soybean are the targeted crop species.
    Rationale
The study is addressing the challenges of clearly defining pest populations, documenting their biology, developing monitoring and damage assessment techniques, determining the biologies of natural enemies, assessing natural enemies for classical and inundative biological control, and integrating pest suppression strategies into management programs. Major pest species include the European corn borer, corn root worm, wheat midge, Lygus plant bugs, diamondback moth and bertha armyworm.

at the University of Idaho were established in the early 1970's with a pilot area-wide project that brought together extension and research faculty in plant pathology and entomology with regulatory personnel at state and federal agencies. From those beginnings evolved our current statewide mission: to help citizens of Idaho manage pests in ways minimize threats to human health and environmental quality while maximizing the profitability of pest control action. We work to those goals by conducting educational programs and adaptive research that provides our citizens with the tools and training needed to apply integrated pest management, both on the farm and around their homes. Our program emphasizes key agricultural field and row crops but also includes forest and range lands managed for commercial, recreational and wildlife uses. And while we remain a rural state, rapidly growing urban populations in the Boise area and resort destinations in northern Idaho mandate educational outreach about urban pest management.

AFT's Center for Agriculture in the Environment is a national leader in IPM. AFT entered into a cooperative agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency in 1997 to help implement IPM projects around the country. Over the past five years, the projects we've funded have helped 4,350 farmers on 550,000 acres reduce their use of highly toxic pesticides by 30 to 50 percent while remaining profitable. As a result of AFT's work, pesticide use has been reduced by more than 2 million pounds. (Click here for AFT/EPA's most recent IPM projects.)

Home Join About Us Contact Us ... links/resources Frequently Asked Questions What is Integrated Pest Management (IPM)? IPM is an approach to solving pest problems by applying our knowledge about pests to prevent them from damaging crops, harming animals, infesting buildings or otherwise interfering with our livelihood or enjoyment of life. IPM means responding to pest problems with the most effective, least-risk option. Under IPM, actions are taken to control pests only when their numbers are likely to exceed acceptable levels. Any action taken is designed to target the troublesome pest, and limit the impact on other organisms and the environment. Applying pesticides to crops, animals, buildings or landscapes on a routine basis, regardless of need, is not IPM. Applications of pesticides are always the last resort in an IPM program. This unfortunately is coming at a time when N prices are record-high, yields in some Illinois corn fields were reduced by drought in 2005, and corn prices have been held down by reports of higher supplies and some shipping problems.
