    Writing Guidelines for Math
We're told by teachers who know that many math folks will welcome the chance to examine this declaration of writing standards for written assignments in math. One teacher friend tells us: "As a math teacher who is often frustrated by the shoddy written work that I find in student notes or in handed-in assignments, I was very interested to read the benchmarks that someone took the time to think through. As always, our upfront work will pay off. Our students will be clearer about what exactly we want them to do. Equipped with that knowledge they might even meet our benchmarks!"
    Creating a Supportive Math Classroom
More and more students are becoming afraid to try new things in case they fail, and mathematics, with its emphasis on 'right' or 'wrong' answers, can potentially reinforce these fears, argues Margaret Taplin. She looks at ways mathematics teachers can help to create a secure, supportive classroom environment in which students learn not to fear failure and to value mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
    Totally Tessellated
This site is recommended by one of our teacher subscribers, known to us only as "Mary." She writes: "The Totally Tessellated Site is great. It features Escher's work and has great animations for students to view concerning the slide, flips, and turns involved in tessellation. My students in 5th and 6th grade enjoyed exploring the site for ideas when they were creating their tessellations for math class. It also has links to a tessellated art contest for students of all ages." We loved it too!

Teachers all over the country use Microsoft Excel in ways that excite students about the power of math in everyday life. This week, Education World talks with Illinois middle school teacher Kelly McMahon about three important roles Excel plays in her seventh- and eighth-grade classrooms. Included: Samples of student work, ideas from other teachers, and practical Web sites to help teachers get started using Excel in their own classrooms. "I have always been interested in bringing visual, hands-on activities into my classroom," said math teacher Kelly McMahon, who is also assistant principal and technology coordinator for St. Joseph School in Libertyville, Illinois. Topics will be studied in a comprehensive fashion and not as they relate specifically to the traditional fields of science and math. Principles from the traditional branches of science (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.) will be studied to allow a thorough and exhaustive study of a particular topic. The underlying mathematical principles required for a complete understanding will be examined throughout the process. Several scientific topics will be studied during the semester. These may include, but are not limited to, reaction rates, gases, acid/base theory, fluid dynamics, electricity, neurophysiology, cardiophysiology, population demography, and population genetics. Mathematical principles from areas such as Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry, numerical functions, statistics, and calculus will be examined when they apply.
