    What's this?
Home Education Magazine January-February 1997 - Columns Older Kids - Cafi Cohen Rethinking Midschool/High School Math M-A-T-H. What thoughts come to mind with the word MATH? The three R's. A government school "required subject," according to many state statutes and some local regulations. An essential topic in any homeschool. Past that point, what official guidance are you given for teaching math? Often, none. What you cover and how you cover it is up to you. In the absence of specific directions, many homeschooling families pursue what I call School Math. School Math is how most parents studied math when they attended school; and it is how most schools still teach math. School Math involves textbooks, workbooks, and exams. Older kids pursuing School Math study the subject sequentially in other words, arithmetic, followed by algebra, then geometry, second year algebra, trigonometry, and so on. Those using a School Math program must always "show all the steps" and reason exactly like the author of the text reasons. Alternate approaches to problem solving are unacceptable. Getting the right answer is emphasized, often to the exclusion of understanding the process. School Math texts often include unrealistic problems. Typical is the following. A 20-ft. telephone pole falls across a street and the two ends extend one foot and three feet either side of the street. How wide is the street?

    35. AlgebraLAB: Making Math And Science Connections
Developing integrated math and physical science courses that include topics from Teachers will be able to team both curriculum and daily activities.
    http://www.algebralab.org/
Welcome to AlgebraLAB , an online learning environment that focuses on topics and skills from high school mathematics that students must be able to draw upon in their introductory science courses. Since math is the language of science, science courses are often where students first realize “Oh, so this is why we learned that in algebra …”
In many cases students often discover that it is one or more math skills that initially block their ability to understand and internalize new science concepts. In science classes students must learn how to recognize when particular mathematics procedures are applicable so that they can select from their "mathematics toolboxes" the correct methods needed to solve new problems. And to make matters worse, these new problems are often "word problems" that require not only an ultimate solution but an understanding of how to interpret givens, relate cause-and-effect, and set up any initial conditional equations.
We have used successful research-based design models to drive the project’s design and implementation. AlgebraLAB focuses on building the connections between science and the basic mathematics required for its understanding by means of:

    The New Look of
    Math Instruction at CTCs
    by Valerie Weagle
For students who are struggling with math, finding exciting and engaging ways to interest them in the subject and help them succeed can be a difficult task. There is no shortage of web sites and software packages that help students practice their skills, but these can often lead to frustration for students. Integrating math with other disciplines into hands-on, project-based learning activities can transform math from a daunting and overwhelming subject to an approachable and practical set of skills. Two CTCs engaged in integrated, hands-on learning programs shared some of their wisdom and experience with ACC.

    Math Outside of School
Giving students the skills they need to succeed is at the heart of many CTCs' missions. Many of the students served in these centers have had limited success in academics and come to the CTC feeling disenchanted with their school experience. As a result, there is always the danger in academics-focused afterschool programs, like those of many CTCs, of scaring these students away by having programming that too closely resembles more school. Math instruction in particular can seem tedious to students who have not experienced much success in the past. With a growing focus on test performance and accountability sparked by the No Child Left Behind Act, it is essential to break the cycle of failure for these students. Part of the challenge in working with this group is motivating them to want to learn. An important step in that process is engaging them in activities that are relevant and useful not only to their success in school, but also to their understanding of and success in "the real world."

A t long last a guide to planning and implementing integrated lesson plans has been created! This pathfinder was designed to take math and integrate it with other subjects. Inside this pamphlet you will find lessons and activities that join math with children's story books, geography, language arts, science, art, and cooperative learning. Integrating subject matter is a holistic approach to education. All the subjects listed above are integrally woven in children's everyday life outside the classroom. So why teach these subjects in isolation? The integration of subject matter enriches learning and makes it more meaningful to students because it teaches fewer things in greater depth which leads to greater student understanding. Workshop Overview
See below for Workshop Resources Technology tools and web-based materials support teachers and students in meeting the Maine Learning Results, NCTM principles and standards for school mathematics, and ISTE technology literacy standards. This workshop, designed to support middle school teachers of mathematics, will explore a range of online applets, tools, web-based resources, and exemplary projects that utilize content centered technology application to support these goals. Participants will learn about and experiment with technology tools that can be used to support mathematical investigation, facilitate the organization and analysis of data, engage learners in reasoning and problem solving, and deepen reflection. For example, participants will engage in mathematical investigation using online math applets, learn about online math resources, and be introduced to online professional development forums. Participants will complete the workshop with a collection of resources and preliminary plans for an online math activity that utilizes technology to serve curricular goals.
