    Conventions and other relevant instruments
The ILO has adopted the only international legal instruments that specifically address indigenous and tribal peoples:
The Indigenous and Tribal Populations Convention, 1957 (No. 107)
; and The Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989 (No. 169)
The ILO also adopted the Resolution on ILO Action Concerning Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in 1989, which outlines possible forms of action to be taken to promote the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples. (text of the resolution - pdf 26K
Convention No. 107 remains in force for 18 countries ( see list of ratifications ) but, it is no longer open for ratification. For countries that have ratified Convention No. 107 and not Convention No. 169, Convention No. 107 is still in force. However, for those countries who had ratified Convention No. 107, but later ratified Convention No. 169, Convention No. 107 has been replaced by Convention No. 169.
Some 15 years have now passed since the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989 (No. 169), was adopted. To date, Convention No. 169 has been ratified by 17 states (

    Concepts:
Mankind has been assisted in the work of unlocking the secrets of the universe through the discovery and use of various instruments. Among these are the telescope, spectroscope, and the camera which has been adapted to the study of celestial phenomena. In order for people to perfect and use astronomical instruments, it was necessary to have a firm understanding of the characteristics of the light. This knowledge of light was used to invent many instruments for further study of light and is presently being used to improve and invent new instruments that will assist in bringing the phenomena of outer space closer to those on Earth. The innovation, adoption, and use of scientific measurement has enabled mankind to make progress in measuring objects of infinitesimally small dimensions as well as gigantic proportions. Without the use of such measuring systems, human beings would be at a loss for accuracy in determining the size of objects in the universe.
    Astronomy and Astronomical Instruments
In 1609, the same year that Johannes Kepler published his famous laws on planetary motion, Galileo Galilei took his first look at the heavens through his primitive telescope. This was a crude instrument which he made by fitting a lens to each end of an old organ pipe. Until that moment, no man had ever seen any more in the heavens than had the ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, or Greeks, for the only thing available to them were their eyes alone. From 1609, however, things were changed, for it was then that humanity began penetrating the secrets of the heavens. A step was made toward an understanding of the true dimensions of the universe.

Sources for Identification of Antique Medical Instruments
in Print and on the Internet
    Introduction:
The internet has become an invaluable tool for medical librarians in answering reference questions both for the professional and consumer clients they serve. What the internet lacks in efficiency, comprehensiveness and reliability is made up in speed, cost effectiveness and relative currency. There are, however, some questions that still require refined searching or in-depth expertise that is not entirely available on the internet. The search for identification, use, value and historical context of antique medical instruments is one such field where the marriage of print and electronic sources provides the inquirer with the best of both worlds. This paper will review both print sources and internet websites that may be consulted on medical antiques.

    Method:
Three search engines, Google, WiseNut, and Fast were selected based on total and relative size.(1) The same search strategy "+medical +antiques" was performed on each search engine. This was to insure that all results would have both of the words in the title, although not necessarily in that order or next to each other. The first 20 hits were examined for each search engine.

What's the difference between a violin and a viola?
There is no difference. The violin just looks smaller because the violinist's head is so much bigger.
What's the difference between a violin and a fiddle?
A fiddle is fun to listen to.
Why are viola jokes so short?
    So violinists can understand them.

    Significant Points
    • Training requirements include a high school diploma and, in some cases, postsecondary education, coupled with significant on-the-job training.
    • Good opportunities are expected for most types of jobs.
    • Overall employment is expected to grow more slowly than average, but projected growth varies by detailed occupation.
    • About 1 out of 5 is self-employed.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Repairing and maintaining watches, cameras, musical instruments, medical equipment, and other precision instruments requires a high level of skill and attention to detail. For example, some devices contain tiny gears that must be manufactured to within one one-hundredth of a millimeter of design specifications, and other devices contain sophisticated electronic controls. Camera and photographic equipment repairers Camera repairers also repair the increasingly popular digital cameras. Repairs on such cameras are similar to those for most modern cameras, but, because digital cameras have no film to wind, they have fewer moving parts.
