    Glossary Terms
This is a glossary of terms describing or relating to Aboriginal Peoples in Canada, as defined by Aboriginal Peoples themselves. Some of the terms listed here have strict legal definitions. They may seem outdated, but they are still necessary in certain contexts. There is no single term to describe Indigenous Peoples. In Canada, Aboriginal Peoples is often used. In the United States, American Indian and Native American are commonly used. United Nations documents and organizations (and some Aboriginal scholars and advocates) use the term Indigenous People. Many Aboriginal Peoples are using English transliterations of terms from their own languages to identify themselves (e.g., the Mohawk Nation is also called Kanien 'Kaha:ka; the Blackfoot, Sisika; the Chippewas, Anishinabeg; and the Swampy Cree, Mushkegowuk).

Aadizookaan means (in Anishinaabemowin , or Ojibwe language) "a traditional story", what anthros and others seem to like calling legends or myths. These are or in their original, were often sacred. Those represnt large themes of human existence: where we came from, how we should live, reconcilliation to the tragedies of life, thankfulness There are smaller stories: teaching, humorous, answering "Why?" questions about natural phenomena and behavior. Finally, traditional indigenous peoples had no TV, no books; stories were entertainment, too. TO THOSE WHO TRANSCRIBE NATIVE MYTHS: Our myths appear popular as NuAge web page fillers. Native myths, as opposed to tall tales and little stories for children, are not entertainment. It is important that you cite the source from which you transcribed it, the collector or non-Indian reteller-translator of the myth, and if given, the original teller. And, of course, the tribe. I think Native myths are meaningless removed from cultural context, but if there is any educational value to them, they must be identified with a specific people, time, and place. Some retellers are reliable. Others sanitize and restructure stories, making them worthless as a means to learn about a culture a kind of racism, where retellers believe Native myths (which are often owned by specific individuals or families) are merely primitive raw material for their own literary efforts, often crude and condescending. There are

    issue 186 - August 1988 Indian wars
Native people the world over have become increasingly embroiled
in global militarism - often against their will. Uranium is mined on Indian
land in Saskatchewan and Nevada, US army bases are built on native land
in the Philippines, American and French nuclear weapons disrupt the lives of
Pacific peoples. Here we look at two case studies of these new Indian wars.
Nicaragua - where the Miskito people were swept up in President Reagan’s
fanatical campaign against the Sandinista revolution. And Labrador
    - where the lnnu people are fighting NATO war training that
threatens to destroy their culture. Caught in the crossfire by Ana Carrigan It is 6:00 am on the beach at Puerto Cabezas on Nicaragua’s Atlantic coast. Every morning at this hour 100 or so townspeople gather to watch the fishermen haul their nets to shore with the night’s catch. The scene has a Biblical timelessness about it: this is how they might have fished on the shores of Lake Galilee. For someone fresh off the plane from Managua that over-worked phrase ‘culture-shock’ takes on fresh meaning. This curious part of Central America still retains the feeling of a remote Caribbean island - one that has become involved in a social revolution as if by accident.
