Diet To Your Door Although health and healing are the common goals of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and allopathic medicine, their ideas on the etiology of disease, disease itself and the process used to regain health are decidedly different. The allopathic physician learns that disease must be cured by prescribing medicine, which kills bacteria or renders a virus ineffective; at times surgical intervention is a necessity. There is nothing inherently wrong with this approach. It often works. The question worth exploring is why TCM succeeds where allopathic medicine fails? What is the mechanism of action of acupuncture and herbal medicine, which results in palliation or cure that is not manifest in biomedicine? Though the goal of TCM is to cure a patient, the doctor of TCM attempts to do this not by treating the disease but rather by treating the whole person, taking into account the various attributes of an individual which, when combined, account for an individual being sick or healthy. A person, according to the tenets of TCM is more than their pathology. While treating the pathology may yield impressive results, they are commonly temporary. A person is not, according to TCM, represented solely by his or her illness, but by the accumulation of every human interaction engaged in from the moment of birth, including the values of and the culture from which the individual develops. The emotional experiences, eating habits, work habits, work and living environment, personal habits and the social milieu are factors that contribute to disease and are factors which, when modified appropriately may lead to regained health.

Shattering the myths about male infertility
Treatment of male factors may be more successful and cost-effective than you think
Jay I. Sandlow, MD VOL 107 / NO 2 / FEBRUARY 2000 / POSTGRADUATE MEDICINE CME learning objectives
  • To understand the relative frequency of male factors in infertile couples
  • To identify causes of male subfertility
  • To know which causes of male subfertility are treatable
This page is best viewed with a browser that supports tables Preview : Male factors play a role in up to half of subfertile couples, contrary to the myth that male factors rarely play a role. In this article, Dr Sandlow counters this and other myths about male infertility and suggests that primary care physicians can increase a couple's chance of conceiving by evaluating for male as well as female factors. This article will also help primary care physicians provide appropriate education and treatment, as well as determine when to make a referral to a male-infertility specialist.
Sandlow JI. Shattering the myths about male infertility: treatment of male factors may be more successful and cost-effective than you think. Postgrad Med 2000;107(2):235-45 I n recent years, infertility has received increasing public attention. It is estimated that nearly 10% of couples are infertile (ie, unable to conceive after attempts over a span of at least 1 year) and that one of every five couples between the ages of 35 and 44 has difficulty conceiving. This article examines some of the myths associated with male infertility and subfertility and identifies the role of the primary care physician in managing the condition.

... PCOS and Hirsutism
Infertility Infertility is the inability to reproduce. It affects 6.1 million American women and their partners, about 10% of the population of reproductive age. Infertility affects men and women at equal rates. There are many causes of infertility, and 25 percent of infertile couples have multiple contributing factors. The causes of infertility may include androgen-related disorders, endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Infertility can be linked to abnormal ovulation (release of an egg from the ovary) or abnormal development or shape of the uterus. Symptoms Many women who are infertile may exhibit no symptoms. Symptoms that do present in others may include:
  • Irregular ovulation and abnormal menstrual periods Pelvic pain
Diagnosis Before you are treated for infertility, you and your partner must be evaluated by a doctor. Several testing procedures may be performed to identify the cause or causes of infertility. Possible procedures include:
  • Blood tests Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) Laparoscopy Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans Medical history Physical examination Semen analysis Ultrasound
Treatments Normal fertility requires that the ovary release an egg or ovum, which can be fertilized by the male sperm. After fertilization, the developing embryo must enter the uterus where the endometrium is appropriately developed to allow for the pregnancy to continue. Women with PCOS, endometriosis and other reproductive disorders can often become pregnant, in some cases naturally and in other cases with the help of medications or assisted reproductive technologies. For some, surgery can improve the chance of natural conception. For others, infertility therapies, such as ovulation induction or in vitro fertilization, may be more effective.

Subject: Fertility
What Is It?

Infertility is a disease or condition of the reproductive system often diagnosed after a couple has had one year of unprotected, well-timed intercourse, or if the woman has been unable to carry a pregnancy to term. If after a year of unprotected intercourse, a woman under the age of 35 has not become pregnant, she should seek treatment for infertility. Women over 35, or women who have a history of pelvic inflammatory disease, painful periods, miscarriage or irregular cycles, or whose partners have a low sperm count, should seek help earlier (after six months). What Are My Options?
Without a known condition that prevents pregnancy, a woman has a number of options to overcome infertility.
  • Fertility Drugs
As a first step, a doctor may prescribe a fertility drug such as clomiphene citrate, sometimes known as Clomid. This usually enhances ovulation, increasing the number of eggs released. Even though the medicine can be taken in tablet form at home, experts stress that the patient needs to be closely monitored by a doctor. It should not be taken longer than three months.
  • Intrauterine Insemination
Another way to increase the chances for pregnancy is intrauterine insemination (IUI), sometimes called artificial insemination, using your partner's sperm. In this procedure, the male's sperm is harvested, treated and inserted via a soft catheter into the woman's uterus during ovulation, which is usually enhanced with fertility medications. The procedure is relatively simple and painless, akin to a Pap smear. IUI is used to treat infertility in women under age 43 except in cases of tubal blockage or damage, poor egg quality, menopause and severe problems with the partner's sperm. IUI should be utilized for a maximum of about six months in women who are ovulating on their own. IUI treatment can run longer in women taking ovulation stimulants.
