Module Short Name BMP Module Title Broadening Midwifery Practice Module Aims/Learning Outcomes The aims of this module are; To examine how the midwife can empower women and their families to make choices and decision enabling individualised woman centred care. To focus on the issues related to care of women and their families from a user perspective within the wider context of the health of the nation agenda and society. To examine a variety of psychological, sociological and sexual health issues and the underpinning ethical principles. To explore the wider implications of midwifery practice and aims to provide the student with an opportunity to further develop the research and evidence based approach to care delivery. To enable the students to examine and debate controversial issues related to childbearing eg. genetic modification of stem cells, screening methods and other fertility technologies. To examine pain perception and behaviour in both the mother and the neonate in greater depth. To explore further the role of the midwife in meeting the needs of women and their families in bereavement and loss. The wider issues underpinning these difficult situations will be addressed and debated.
