With the founding of S outhern O ntario F ertility T echnologies, Dr. Martin brings a very special approach to the treatment of infertility. First of all, he wants his patients to be well informed. To do this, he has developed an extensive set of information packages , which cover all topics of infertility. He also believes infertility services should be caring, available, affordable and as non-stressful as possible. SOFT's capable and caring staff take into account all aspects of the patients they serve. At the clinic, research in intrauterine insemination, ovulation induction, IVF, male infertility, endometriosis, ovarian reserve, polycystic ovary syndrome, menopause and others, are continued and expanded. Dr. James S. B. Martin Dr. James S. B. Martin founded and became the medical director of Southern Ontario Fertility Technologies in October 2000. Dr Moira O'Bryan, medical scientist, was interviewed for the Australian Academy of Science's Interviews with Australian scientists program in 2001. The interview was conducted by Ms Nessy Allen. Here is an edited transcript. You can order the videotape from us for $65.50 (including GST). List of edited transcripts Introduction Moira O’Bryan, despite her youth, has already made a major contribution in the area of molecular reproduction and endocrinology. She started her career at Melbourne's St Vincent’s Hospital, working on the characterisation of an immune regulator in the male reproductive tract and its effect on infertility. Awarded a Mellon Foundation fellowship, she worked at Rockefeller University in New York on the endocrinology behind male fertility. After three years she returned to Australia, to the Centre for Molecular Reproduction and Endocrinology at the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development, Monash University, in Melbourne. Here she heads a large research group, the main projects of which revolve around identifying components of the mammalian sperm tail, identifying their function and determining if they are associated with human male infertility. Family influences Moira, where were you born, and when?

    Population Policy: Ideology as Science
    Nicholas Eberstadt
    First Things 40 (January 1994): 30-38.
    I
In recent years the poorer regions of the earth have been swept by a "population revolution" which, though it has attracted comparatively little attention, is nevertheless both unprecedented and pregnant with consequences for the peoples of the countries affected. This "revolution" has been taking place neither in the bedroom nor in the health clinic, but rather in the corridors of government. Among otherwise diverse countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, a single idea has rapidly gained currency: that a modern government should have a population "policy"-an array of laws and measures specifically aimed at shaping the composition, size, and rates of change of the national population. The adoption of comprehensive population policy marks an eventful change in the conception of the role of government in civic life. In the past, governments were often called upon to perform duties with demonstrable demographic consequences-the regulation of immigration, for example, or the eradication of communicable disease. The demographic impact of such programs, however, was typically subsidiary to their intended purpose (the preservation of national sovereignty, the promotion of public health, etc.). The idea of harnessing state power to the goal of altering the demographic rhythms of society per se suggests-and indeed almost seems to require-a new sort of relationship between the state and the citizen.
