Infertility Creates Couple Stress By Linda S. Mintle, Ph.D. Psychotherapist Infertility is a disruption of the family life cycle. The stress can be enormous. SilasPartners.com - Over five million people of childbearing age in the United States are infertile according to RESOLVE, the national infertility organization. Infertility is defined by the medical community as the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected sex, or the inability to carry pregnancy to live birth. It is usually considered a couple-problem even though one partner may carry the medical diagnosis.

Embryo Adoption: Science and Compassion For the Least of These
Grace's story is a cautionary tale of what can happen when medicine and science outrun moral reasoning.
by by Tom Neven
Her name is Grace. She's very cute, and her parents love her very much — both sets of them.
Grace is a special girl. The woman she lives with in Southern California, Elizabeth, is her legal and biological mother. Elizabeth is not, however, her genetic mother. Grace's genetic mom lives in the Midwest. Grace's story is one of God's love, providence and, well ... grace. It is also, however, a cautionary tale of what can happen when medicine and science outrun moral reasoning.
A moral dilemma
Grace began life as all humans do, as an embryo. But Grace was created outside the womb in a process called in vitro fertilization — she's a "test-tube" baby. The sperm and egg of a husband and wife were brought together in a laboratory, where Grace was conceived. In fact, more than 20 other eggs were fertilized at that time. That married couple in the Midwest was undergoing fertility treatment; several of the fertilized eggs were transplanted back into the mother's womb, and she later gave birth.

Fathers Can Pass Along Infertility
Talk about creating work for yourself. Evidence suggests that a common method of artificial insemination is passing on a genetic defect that causes infertility in one out of every 2,000 men. This would seem to be excellent news for artificial inseminators. Intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI, "is now a standard part of the repertoire of assisted reproduction," said Dr. David Page of Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. "There have been thousands of children born through ICSI. There will be thousands more this year and for years to come." ICSI, which costs between $5,000 and $12,000 for each attempt, involves injecting single sperm into individual eggs and transferring the resulting embryos into a woman's reproductive system. The procedure is ideal for men with Y chromosome deletions because it requires only a few sperm, which can usually be retrieved from the patient's semen or testes. But Page's research confirms what scientists suspected: ICSI allows male infertility caused by the deletions to be passed from father to son. It has long been understood that male infertility is not, indeed cannot, be passed on via traditional methods of reproduction.

    The Road To Pregnancy
Is It Time To Ask for Directions?
Getting pregnant and having a baby seems like the "thing to do" these days. In addition, advancing reproductive technology is constantly in the news . Depending on what you read or who you ask, there are many potential reasons for what seems to be a growing number of folks who have trouble conceiving "the old-fashioned way." Like most people, the term "infertility" may be a word that you've never pondered the meaning of before now. Thanks in part to the growing presence in the media of news about fertility and the lack thereof, many folks are becoming conscious of the possibility that infertility may indeed refer to them. It's a scary thought, so scary that lots of people never quite get around to thinking it. If it helps to soften the edges, you might try thinking instead of "conception difficulties", "sub-fertility" or in some cases, "difficulty carrying to term". At any rate, "infertility" simply refers to the inability to conceive or impregnate, and possibly to the inability to successfully maintain a pregnancy after conception. Infertility is not, in and of itself, a disease; rather it is a condition often caused by disease, although not necessarily.

Commission on Population and Development Thirty-fifth Session th Meeting (AM)
ABORTION, CORRELATION BETWEEN POVERTY, FERTILITY RATES AMONG ISSUES DISCUSSED
AS COMMISSION CONCLUDES DEBATE ON NATIONAL EXPERIENCE IN POPULATION MATTERS
The issues of family planning, correlation between poverty and fertility rates, abortion, reproductive health and rights education, and HIV/AIDS were high on the agenda of the Commission for Population and Development this morning as it concluded its general debate on national experience in population matters.
17.2 legally induced abortions per 1,000 fertile-age women in Lithuania.  Since 1995, the abortion rate in the country had declined almost twofold, but was still three times higher than in the Scandinavian countries.
Exchanging information about national efforts to combat HIV/AIDS, several representatives emphasized the importance of disseminating information regarding HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, counselling and testing services, syringe exchange programmes, and provision of condoms to the general population.  Also addressed in the debate were the issues of access to drugs, mother-to-child transmission and training of medical personnel, as well as addressing the stigma, still associated with the disease.
    th Meeting (AM)
At the opening of the meeting, Gediminas Serksnys of Lithuania was elected as Vice-Chairman and Richard B. Turkson of Ghana as Vice-Chairman and Rapporteur of the Commission.
