The main meal in Indonesia is usually served at midday. Food which was cooked in the morning is set out all at once. Starting with the eldest the family help themselves to the feast, serving with a spoon and eating with right hands. Most meals are built around a cone-shaped pile of the long-grain, highly polished rice. A meal may include a soup, salad, and another main dish. Whatever the meal, it is accompanied by at least one, and often several relishes that are called Sambals.

    Research Objectives
Forty percent of Indonesia’s total population of 182 million live in villages where charcoal and fuelwood are used for cooking. Families consume 10.6 billion kilograms of fuelwood per year. Deforestation is a significant problem throughout Indonesia, and family cooking needs are a primary contributor to this major environmental problem. Can solar technology significantly reduce the environmental damage caused by fuelwood use in Indonesian villages? BPP Teknologi has pioneered the development of solar cooking ovens which are low-cost and made of local materials. Since 1992, these ovens have been field tested on a small scale. Mrs. Suharta is now initiating a 5-year field test program in Eastern Indonesia on Lombok Island, just east of Bali. Eastern Indonesia is endowed with good solar insulation, and three villages have been selected for this study. This is a technology transfer project as BPP Teknologi introduces their basic oven design to the villagers. The villagers will be given hands-on training in the construction of the ovens and the use of materials which are readily and cheaply available on the island. One hundred ovens will be operational in local homes (free of charge). The impact of the use of these ovens on household fueluse will be analyzed, as well as the economics and social changes at the community and household level.

Keterangan Singkat: Turkish food ranks high among the world's great cuisines. Its taste and depth place it with French and Chinese; its simplicity and healthfulness rank it number one. Developed by Turkish peasants for whom eating was obviously a great pleasure, Turkish cooking evolved to include the sophisticated "palace" cooking of Istanbul. It remains, however, a simple cuisine based on fragrant Mediterranean ingredients combined in exciting and unexpected ways. Ayla Algar, a Turkish-born lecturer at the University of California, Berkeley, provides American cooks with 175 recipes for this vibrant and tasty food, presented against the rich and fascinating backdrop of Turkish history and culture. Tempting recipes for kebabs, pilafs meze (appetizers), dolmas (those delicious stuffed vegetables or vine leaves), soups, fish, manti and other pasta dishes, lamb, poultry, yogurt, bread, baklava and other traditional sweets are introduced here to American cooks in accessible form, easy for any home cook to make. With its emphasis on grains, vegetables, fruits, olive oil and other healthy foods, Turkish cooking puts a new spin on familiar ingredients and offers culinary adventure coupled with a satisfying and delicious diet.

Police probe Indonesian fishing boat cooking oil incident
A man on board an Indonesian fishing boat in Darwin Harbour has severe burns to 45 per cent of his body after being burnt with cooking oil. Police are unsure whether the act was deliberate. The man is believed to be the captain of one of the boats being detained in the harbour for illegal fishing. He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital early this morning where he is being treated for severe burns. Police Watch Commander Chris Lyndon says language difficulties are making it hard to determine the cause of the incident. "That's under investigation, we're not certain whether it was an accident or whether it was a deliberate act by somebody, but we believe the person who was injured was the captain of one of the vessels there." Detectives will use interpreters as they continue their investigations today.
