"The sentences make a mockery of the international community's insistence that justice be done in this horrific case," the UNHCR said in a statement. The six were jailed on Friday for 10-20 months, but had faced up to 34 years in prison over the slayings, which occurred during a rampage by pro-Jakarta East Timorese militias in the West Timor border town of Atambua last September. All six East Timorese men, who consider themselves Indonesian, were convicted of violence against people and property, as opposed to murder, court officials said. "The elements that caused the U.N. officers' deaths cannot be proved to be (linked to the defendants) . . . because the action was perpetrated by a mob," Judge Anak Agung Gede Dalem said when he sentenced three of the men.

As the power in Central Java declined around the tenth century, powerful kingdoms rose in East Java to fill the vacuum. Between 1055 and 1222, the kingdom of Kediri prospered and expanded. During the reign of king Erlangga both East Java and Bali enjoyed a lucrative trade with the surrounding islands when their arts flourished. Parts of the Mahabarata epic were translated and reinterpreted to conform closer to the East Javanese outlook and philosophy, and it was from this era that East Java inherited much of its treasure of temple art. In 1292 the Majapahit dynasty began an empire that was to dominate the entire archipelago, the Malay peninsula and part of the Philippines. Majapahit also established profitable trade relations with China and other countries of the South East Asian region. Today the open-air amphi theater at Pandaan tells some of the stories of this glorious past. Aided by the Java Ballet performances against a backdrop of distant volcanoes, any traveler will be easily enthralled by the East Java experience, capturing the spirit of the province's culture and scenery. Its capital, Surabaya is second to Jakarta in size, population and commerce. East Java is also the most industrialized province in the nation. With money send by my family in The Netherlands I have already visited schools and distributed new school uniforms to elementary schools and junior/ senior high schools. My house in Banda Aceh is already cleaned but we have still lack of water. The electricity is back. FYI yes I was also here when the tsunami started. I have my blue book still to proof it. Four days after the tsunami, me and my family in law decided to go by car to Bireuen, about 6 hours by car from Banda Aceh. On our way we passed villages along the coast who were totally destroyed and mosques filled up with refugees. I returned to Banda Aceh after spending 10 days in Bireuen. Giving relief aid in Aceh is not always easy ... for any organisation. Its still one of the most corrupt areas of Indonesia and if yr boxes of clothes, toys and the like fall into the wrong hands, the goods will end up at Ulee Kareng market in Banda Aceh to be sold to locals for Rp. 5000, per piece. Believe me. I have seen it happen already.

There are said to be over 15'000 islands with more than 80'000 kilometer coastline - that's a lot of potentional area for coral reefs! Indonesia is not so well known and lately many divers don't go there anymore because of the political situation. However this makes for nice uncrowded diving at places like Bali (which usually has a lot of tourists). I have been to Indonesia seven times for extensive diving and just now (summer 2003) visited it again. Some of my greatest dives were done here in Sulawesi Bali and the Komodo islands! I have compiled many pages of information, tips about dive areas, descriptions and maps of dive sites and liveaboards, photos of the underwater animals you will find there, and much more. I hope a look into my pages will make your mouth water and make you want to go to Indonesia! However these are also one of the most endangered reef areas in the world.
