Indonesia's History and Background ANCIENT TIMES
Indonesia did not exist as yet during the Palaeocene period (70 million years BC), the Eocene period (30 million years BC), the Oligacene period (25 million years BC) and the Miocene period (12 million years BC). It is believed that Indonesia must have existed during the Pleistocene period (4 million years BC) when it was linked with the present Asian mainland. It was during this period that the Homonids made their first appearance and Java Man inhabited the part of the world now called Indonesia. Java Man, named Pithecanthropus Erectus by Eugence Dubois who found the fossils on the island of Java, must have been the first inhabitant of Indonesia.

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS Indonesia's foreign relations after 1966 can be characterized as generally moderate, inclined toward the West, and regionally focused. As a founding member of the Nonaligned Movement Given Indonesia's strategic location at the eastern entrance to the Indian Ocean, including command of the Malacca and Sunda straits, the country has been viewed as vital to the Asian security interests of the United States and its allies. Washington extended generous amounts of military aid and became the principal supplier of equipment to the Indonesian armed forces. Because of its nonaligned foreign policy, Jakarta did not have a formal military alliance with the United States but benefited indirectly from United States security arrangements with other states in the region, such as Australia and the Philippines. The New Order's political repressiveness and its pacification of East Timor, however, were criticized directly and indirectly by some United States officials, who in the late 1980s began calling for greater openness. Peter Bellwood's Prehistory of the Indo-Malaysian Archipelago is an excellent source for understanding the early development of Indonesian society. Jacques Dumarçay's

The fall of Malacca to the Portuguese in 1511 is often taken as a turning point in Indonesian history. Over the next century Portuguese efforts were to be directed to securing control of the trade of the Spice Islands. At the end of the 16th century, Dutch and British interests in the region gave rise to a series of voyages: those of James Lancaster in 1591, Cornelis de Houtman in 1595 and again in 1598, Jacob van Neck in 1598, Lancaster again in 1601, and others. In 1602 the Dutch East India Company (formal name United East India Company [Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie; VOC]) received its charter, two years after the formation of the English East India Company; it began to attempt to exclude European competitors from the Indies, control the trade carried on by indigenous Asian traders, and establish its own commercial monopoly. Monopoly itself was not, of course, an innovation.

    Robert Cribb (editor)
Centre of Southeast Asian Studies, Monash University 1990 A book review by Danny Yee One of history's biggest massacres ever took place in Indonesia in 1965/66, when around half a million people were killed in the suppression of the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI). The Indonesian Killings is not a formal history of that event, but a fairly eclectic collection of writings on to the subject, both academic analyses and first hand accounts. Since no systematic account of the killings has been written, however, this volume is a good starting point for anyone interested in one of the most important events in modern Indonesian history. Michael von Langenborg's paper gives a description of the events of 1965/66 from a central, national perspective, and considers the importance of the killings for the history of state power in Indonesia. His basic thesis is that the killings underpin the power of the modern Indonesian state, and that their scale helped legitimise the growth of state power involved with the transition to the New Order. Keith Foulcher contributes a short essay on references to the events of 1965/66 in recent Indonesian literature. He treats in some detail Arjip Rosidi's

President Soeharto History Meanwhile, from about the 8th century, central Java had been ruled by the Sailendra princes. Their small kingdom was argriculturally rich, and they were able to spend lavishly on the erection of religious monuments. The vast sanctuary and burial edifice of Borobudur was built over some 50 years from the end of the 8th century onwards. The Temple to Siva at Prambanan began to be constructed at about the same time that Borobudur was completed, although its builder were not the Sailendras. However, something seems to have happened at about the start of the 10th century, for there was a sudden cessation in the production of monuments, inscriptions and other artefacts from central Java. In the 11th century, traders brought Islam to the islands of the archipelago. Just as the Indonesian had earlier adapted Buddhism to their own needs and beliefs, so they accepted Islam very much on their own terms. However, there was no centre of Indonesian Islamic culture, this scatteredness influence provide a major weakness when the Dutch arrived.

HISTORY National Movements Japanese Occupation The Birth of the Republic Nationalist Movements
When all these regional wars of independence failed, Indonesian nationalists began thinking of a more-organized struggle against Dutch colonialism. The move began with the founding of Boedi Oetomo, literally meaning "noble conduct," on May 20, 1908. This organization of Indonesian intellectuals was initially set up for educational purposes but later turned into politics. It was inspired by Japan's victory over Russia in 1901, which also gave impetus to nationalist movements in many parts of Indonesia. The founder of Boedi Oetomo was Dr. Soetomo who was, at the time, a student of STOVIA, an institution to train Indonesian medi-cal officers. Dr. Soetomo was greatly influenced by Dr. Wahidin Soedirohoesodo and sup-ported by Gunawan and Suradji.
In 1912 Sarekat Dagang Islam, the Association of Moslem Merchants, was formed by Haji Samanhudi and others.
Its objective was at first to stimulate and promote the interest of Indonesian business in the Dutch East Indies. However, in 1912 this organization of middle class businessmen turned into a political party and was renamed Sarekat Islam under the leadership of H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto, Haji Agoes Salim and others. In 1912 a progressive Moslem organization, Muhammadiyah, was established by K.H. Akhmad Dahlan in Yogyakarta for the purpose of social and economic reforms.

Ethnically it is highly diverse, with more than 300 local languages. The people range from rural hunter-gatherers to a modern urban elite. Indonesia has seen unprecedented turmoil in recent years, facing first the Asian financial crisis, then the fall of President Suharto after 32 years in office, the first free elections since the 1960s, the loss of East Timor, independence demands from restive provinces, bloody inter-ethnic and religious conflict and a devastating tsunami. The Dutch gradually consolidated their hold on the area over two centuries, eventually uniting the archipelago in around 1900. Upon the end of Japan's wartime occupation, independence was proclaimed in 1945 by Sukarno, the independence movement's leader. The Dutch formally transferred sovereignty in 1949 after a period of armed struggle.

    Indonesian History
Scientists have found human bones on the Island Java. Indians began life in the A.D. In 1497-1498 Vasco Da Gama found a sea route from Europe to Indonesia. He told Europeans and they came to Indonesia and started taking islands, like bullies. Indonesia has over 700,000 fishing boats but most are sailboats. There are about 3,000 motor boats. On January 11, 1942 during World War II, Japanese forces landed on the Netherlands Indies. On February 27, the Japanese forces defeated an Allied fleet in the battle of the Java sea. They occupied the Netherlands on March 7, and the allies surrendered the next day. The collapse of the Dutch showed Indonesians that Europeans were not superior to Asians. Indonesia today has a government which is trying to solve the severe political and economic problems that came from Sarukon's government. Their government operates Indonesian's postal, telegraph, and telephone systems and its radio and television services but only a few cities get this. All of the cities in Java have television. There are about 120 Indonesian daily newspapers. The largest paper, called the Merdecy of Jakarta, has 45,000 copies. Transportation has been hard since forever because of the seas, thick forests, and the mountains.

    Indonesia - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Indonesia is a country made up of hundreds of islands in the east Indian Ocean. The history of Indonesia has a surprising beginning, a beginning that wasn't discovered until a little more than 100 years ago! In 1890, the land of Java, one of Indonesia's big islands, gave up a 500,000-year-old treasure.
This treasure wasn't gold or silver. It wasn't diamonds or anything pretty. It was bonesold, broken, black bones. These bones belonged to an ancient relative of the human being, called the Homo erectus. A paleontologist from the Netherlands named Eugene Dubois set out in the late 19th century to find the remains of early humans in Southeast Asia. He believed, as many do, that modern humans are relatives of apes. He believed that humans had evolved over time. His search in Indonesia was to find proof of his beliefs. He wanted to find the "missing link," that is, the bones of a half-man, half-ape.
What he found on Java was a part of a skull, part of a leg bone, and some teeth. Scientists believe that the bones belonged to a kind of human being that lived at least 500,000 years ago. It wasn't the "missing link," but Dubois' discovery was an important step in learning human history and the history of Indonesia.
