Parliamentarians were due to make a decision on this issue today and demonstrators are urging legislators not to allow mining in protected areas. "Besides our increasing numbers in Jakarta, we are joined by an upsurge of opposition from regional government and civil society elements including indigenous people's organisations throughout our archipelago" said in the parliamentary forecourt Ms Siti Maimunah from the Indonesian Mining Advocacy Network . "All of this should be enough to halt the government's search for loopholes to avoid protecting our forests and water catchments from destructive mining" she added.

RI's Concerns
Indonesia has approximately 1.3 million internally displaced people, 750,000 of which are under the age of 18. The government has yet to address the problems adequately and analysts fear that continued violence could generate refugee flows into surrounding countries.
Addressing the root causes of displacement is the only long-lasting solution to the plight of IDPs in Indonesia. RI acknowledges the useful planning underway by the government of Indonesia to address the plight of the IDPs, but given the complexity of this situation, timeframes must be extended. Development initiatives can provide support for the communities surrounding the relocation areas and reduce the competition for resources. NGOs can work with the government to improve sites and provide support for long-term assistance. Since RI 's February 2002 visit, we have advocated for the implementation of these recommendations.

The groups include the East Timor Action Network (ETAN), International Labor Rights Fund (ILRF) and Nonviolence International (NI). Contact information for experts on the region available for interview is listed at the end of this advisory. "Delays by the Indonesian government in allowing international access to Aceh may have needlessly cost precious lives. The government's apparent opening of Aceh must continue. The government must cut through its bureaucratic red tape so aid can get through as quickly as possible. International and Indonesian organizations must have unrestricted access to Aceh. International media must be free to report on conditions and relief efforts. Strict limits on internationals’ time in Aceh must be lifted," said Michael Beer of NI.

The Indonesian government says it is confident that an international peace monitoring mission for Aceh province will help to end almost three decades of hostilities.
Jakarta has finalised the details of the mission, confirming that about 200 officials from Europe and Southeast Asia will spend up to one year in Aceh.
The monitors will be deployed immediately after Jakarta signs a historic peace deal with the separatist Free Aceh Movement, or GAM, on August 15.
Indonesia's information minister, Sofyan Djalil, says this mission will succeed because both sides want to see a permanent end to the violence.
"There is a very strong commitment both from the government as well as from GAM's political leadership to respect this MOU [Memorandum of Understanding]," he said.
"We believe, actually, this deal will succeed and then permanent peace will sustain in Aceh permanently."
