Overview
In 1954, Indonesia established the State Commission of Radioactivity and Atomic Energy and began to study the effects of radioactive fallout from U.S. thermonuclear weapons tests in the Pacific. When Indonesia began its nuclear programme, it had no interest in developing nuclear weapons. However, China’s first nuclear test in October 1964, while touted as a victory for the Socialist revolution, was also interpreted by the Indonesian leadership to mean that China was willing to assist like minded nations to develop weapons of their own. These plans were shelved once China made it clear that no weapons-related assistance would be forthcoming and terminated after the military coup that took place in 1966.

It consists of five major islands and about 30 smaller groups. The figure for the total number of islands is 17,508 according to the Indonesian Naval Hydro-Oceanographic office. The archipelago is on a crossroads between two oceans, the Pacific and the Indian ocean, and bridges two continents, Asia and Australia. This strategic position has always influenced the cultural, social, political and economic life of the country. The territory of the Republic of Indonesia stretches from 6 o 08' north latitude to 11 o 15' south latitude, and from 94

GEOGRAPHY
Indonesia Table of Contents Indonesia's variations in culture have been shapedalthough not specifically determinedby centuries of complex interactions with the physical environment. Although Indonesians are now less vulnerable to the vicissitudes of nature as a result of improved technology and social programs, to some extent their social diversity has emerged from traditionally different patterns of adjustment to their physical circumstances.
Geographic Regions
Mountains ranging between 3,000 and 3,800 meters above sea level can be found on the islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi, and Seram. The country's tallest mountains, which reach between 4,700 and 5,000 meters, are located in the Jayawijaya Mountains and the Sudirman Mountains in Irian Jaya. The highest peak, Puncak Jaya, which reaches 5,039 meters, is located in the Sudirman Mountains. Nusa Tenggara consists of two strings of islands stretching eastward from Bali toward Irian Jaya. The inner arc of Nusa Tenggara is a continuation of the chain of mountains and volcanoes extending from Sumatra through Java, Bali, and Flores, and trailing off in the Banda Islands. The outer arc of Nusa Tenggara is a geological extension of the chain of islands west of Sumatra that includes Nias, Mentawai, and Enggano. This chain resurfaces in Nusa Tenggara in the ruggedly mountainous islands of Sumba and Timor.

Society and Geography
Indonesia Table of Contents There are, however, striking similarities among the nation's diverse groups. Besides citizenship in a common nation-state, the single most unifying cultural characteristic is a shared linguistic heritage. Almost all of the nation's more than 195 million people speak one of several Austronesian languages, whichalthough not mutually intelligibleshare many vocabulary items and have similar sentence patterns. Most important, the vast majority of the population can speak Bahasa Indonesia, the official national language. Used in government, schools, print and electronic media, and in multiethnic cities, this Malay-derived language is both an important unifying symbol and a vehicle of national integration. This pattern, however, was changing. Describing Indonesia's cultural and regional variety, American anthropologist Hildred Geertz in 1960 divided the population into three types: wet rice growing (padi) peasants of Java, Bali, and parts of southern Sumatra; coastal Islamic traders in the harbor regions of Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi; and isolated inland swidden farmers throughout the archipelago. In following decades, however, a fourth category emerged. It consisted of a largely urban middle class members of a modern Indonesian national superculture. Indonesia Table of Contents Source:

Indonesia - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Think of the prettiest place you've ever been. Is it near where you live? Maybe it's a beach. Or maybe it's someplace in the woods, or high in the mountains. Maybe it's someplace that's pretty to you and no one else. To many people, Indonesia is the prettiest place in the world.
The country of Indonesia is actually a group of islands. These islands are in the southeastern Indian Ocean. A group of islands is known by a funny name. It is called an archipelago. The Indonesian archipelago is made up of thousands of islands. Some islands are big and some are very small. Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, is on the island of Java. This island is one of the biggest in Indonesia.
An island is a piece of land surrounded on all sides by water. So that means that islands have lots of beaches, of course! Indonesia is famous for its beaches. Its beaches are known around the world for their beauty. Some would say that Indonesia is like heaven.

    Indonesia
Indonesia is located of the east coast of Asia in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Indonesia is made up of tons of little and big islands. One of them is Kilamanta. It occupies two-thirds of the southern island of Borneo. It is the largest territory in Borneo. Also there are others like the Greater Sunda Islands which include Borneo, Celebes, Java, and Sumatra. Borneo is the third largest island besides Greenland and New Guinea. Indonesia lies on the equator so it is really hot. Indonesia's republic population is 187,600,000. It has probably had annual growth over the years.
That population was taken in 1993. The soil is predominantly infertile because of the leaching. Most of the petroleum is extracted from eastern Sumatra and Kilamanta. Indonesia is the biggest producer of liquefied natural gas. Indonesia highest elevation is 16,503 feet. Indonesia is about 25% as large as the U.S.A. Indonesia is
covered with rain forests. Much of the country has mountains. Some of the territories are so large that they take up most of Indonesia. A large island we already mentioned is Kilamantan. It takes up 28% of Indonesia. The territories Irian, Jaya, they take up the western half of New Guinea. New Guinea takes up 22% of Indonesia. Many peaks in Indonesia are between 6,000 and 12,000 feet high. Indonesia stretches over 3,200 miles. The eastern territories of Indonesia are believed to have been a part of Australia, but at some point it drifted or broke away from that continent. There are more than 400 volcano but only 60 are active.
