    Geography
Indonesia's variations in culture have been shapedalthough not specifically determinedby centuries of complex interactions with the physical environment. Although Indonesians are now less vulnerable to the vicissitudes of nature as a result of improved technology and social programs, to some extent their social diversity has emerged from traditionally different patterns of adjustment to their physical circumstances.
    Geographic Regions
Mountains ranging between 3,000 and 3,800 meters above sea level can be found on the islands of Sumatra, Java, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi, and Seram. The country's tallest mountains, which reach between 4,700 and 5,000 meters, are located in the Jayawijaya Mountains and the Sudirman Mountains in Irian Jaya. The highest peak, Puncak Jaya, which reaches 5,039 meters, is located in the Sudirman Mountains. Nusa Tenggara consists of two strings of islands stretching eastward from Bali toward Irian Jaya. The inner arc of Nusa Tenggara is a continuation of the chain of mountains and volcanoes extending from Sumatra through Java, Bali, and Flores, and trailing off in the Banda Islands. The outer arc of Nusa Tenggara is a geological extension of the chain of islands west of Sumatra that includes Nias, Mentawai, and Enggano. This chain resurfaces in Nusa Tenggara in the ruggedly mountainous islands of Sumba and Timor. The Maluku Islands (or Moluccas) are geologically among the most complex of the Indonesian islands. They are located in the northeast sector of the archipelago, bounded by the Philippines to the north, Irian Jaya to the east, and Nusa Tenggara to the south. The largest of these islands include Halmahera, Seram, and Buru, all of which rise steeply out of very deep seas. This abrupt relief pattern from sea to high mountains means that there are very few level coastal plains.

TraveLearn Cybertravel News Indonesia - Volume 18 Indonesia Trivia
Indonesia is the most diverse country in the world. Its 190 million people comprise some 50 large ethnic groups, and 250 smaller ones. Its approximately 18,000 islands range from tiny atolls to the second and third largest islands in the world, some covered with humid rain forests and dense tropical growth, parts of others parched and barren. Indonesia Book Selections
Yesterday and Today - These book selections reflect TraveLearn's tour philosophy of exploring, explaining, and teaching - not only about ancient traditions and cultures, but also providing insights into contemporary local customs and the current social and political situations in various destinations. Indonesia Yesterday and Today The Island of Bali by Adam Schwarz , 1993, paperback by Westview Press in 1999. Written by a correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review, this book provides an outstanding description and analysis of Indonesian politics. While the book was written before Suharto was forced to step down as president in 1998, the author predicted the economic crisis that would create an even greater income gap and dissatisfaction among the poorer native Indonesians and the minority and richer Chinese Indonesians. An excellent introduction to the politics and complex issues confronting one of the most diverse countries in the world. Indonesia Recipe Selection

    About Indonesia Geography
Indonesia is a land of vivid contrasts. Gleaming urban skyscrapes tower above tiny roadside kiosks selling ancient herbal remedies thatch-roofed village houses sport a television in the family room and a team of oxen tethered in the yard. To understand the forces shaping the personality of Indonesia, past and present, many of the nation's most fundamental characteristics can be discerned from the contours of a map. The map reveals a sprawling nation, tracing the path of the Equator over several thousand miles. Comprising 13,700 islands a bridge between the landmass of Southeast Asia and the continent of Australia the vast archipelago of Indonesia spans three time zones over a width greater than the distance from Dublin to Moscow, or from Florida to Alaska. Indonesia's historical evolution has been strongly influenced by the sheer forces of it's own geography with the interplay between climate, rainfall and volcanic activity shaping agricultural and population patterns in different ways throughout the country's enormous diversity of islands. Islands such as Java and Bali are endowed with some of the most fertile soil of the Earth. For this reason, they are most heavily populated and enjoy the most ancient of cultures. Other regions such as Kalimantan, with its heavy forest canopy, or Nusa Tenggara (Lesser Sunda) islands, with their more arid climate are home to smaller numbers of people.

Official Website of the North Sulawesi Tourism Promotion Board (NSTPB) Local Time Manado:
    Geography

The province of North Sulawesi with an area of 1,533,698 ha is located at 0º30"- 4º 3" North Latitude and 121º127" East Longitude. To the north the region borders on the Republic of the Philippines, Sulawesi Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The Eastern part is on the Maluku Sea and the Southern side is the Tomini Gulf. The western part borders Gorontalo Province, which until the end of 2000 was a part of North Sulawesi and then became an own province.
The terrain is extremely mountainous and hilly, stretching from the Lembean - Wulur Mahatus mountain chain in Minahasa to Mount Ambang - Mount Gambuta in Bolaang Mongondow. There are some active active and many extinct volcanoes, some towering 1,800 - 2,000 meters. Rich volcanic ash has blessed North Sulawesi with fertile lands; the highlands and lowlands producing rice, coconut, clove, nutmeg, vanilla and vegetables. The plains produce rice and corn in Dumoga, Ayong and Sangkub (Bolaang Mongondow). Plateaus in Tondano (Minahasa) also produce rice and corn, while Modoinding is known for its vegetables. Sangihe Talaud is recognized for its high quality nutmeg and Rumbia Trees (The Sago Palm is the source of a special flour for traditional cookies/snacks).
Sulawesi is surrounded by deep waters, the Sulawesi Sea in North Sulawesi is approx. 6,200 m deep.
