indonesia s leading English Newspaper. The journal and resource of indonesia today.
http://www.thejakartapost.com/about/about_promotion.asp
About Us September 23, 2005 Editorial Staff History Sunday Edition International Awards ... Online Edition Promoting Art and Culture As the newspaper grows, so does its involvement in activities outside its line of business. In the past 13 years of existence, the Post has contributed significantly to the promotion of the country's rich and diverse cultures as well as fascinating art life. It is generally accepted that newspapers serve society in at least four ways. They inform, influence, entertain and contribute to the economic system. The way they perform these functions, however, varies from one to another, according to the philosophy each one holds, according to the audience to which each one commits itself to serve. In the case of the Post , delivering a high quality newspaper every day is not an end in itself. It is only a means to serving the higher purpose of promoting ever-changing humankind, a task which is becoming more relevant today as the world finds itself in the middle of a process of transformation into a global village. In short, the Post commits itself to promoting people of culture in the broadest sense.

Islamic Political Culture
Of Indonesia's population, 87.1 percent identified themselves as Muslim in 1980. This number was down from 95 percent in 1955. The figures for 1985 and 1990 were not released by the government's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), suggesting a further decline that would fuel the fires of Muslim indignation over Christianization and secularization under the New Order. Nevertheless, Indonesia was still the largest Muslim nation in the world in the early 1990s, united with the universal Islamic community ( ummah ) not only in the profession of faith but also in adherence to Islamic law (see Religion and Worldview , ch. 2). The appeal of Islam was not weakened when it was supplanted by modern secular nationalism as the basis for the independent Indonesian state. In fact, given the prominence of Islamic proselytization and reinvigoration, the people's desire to maintain Islamic institutions and moral values arguably was at an all-time high in Indonesia. There was, however, a separation between Islam as a cultural value system and Islam as a political movement. Islam in Indonesia is not monolithic. The majority of Indonesia's nominal or statistical Muslims

Indonesia: Bali - Arts and Culture
Bali provides an ideal setting in which to study the contending forces and contradictions at play throughout Indonesia. A predominantly Hindu island in an otherwise Muslim nation, Bali is one of the most extensively researched islands of the archipelago, due in part to its unique blend of religious and cultural influences, its rich artistic heritage, and the continued importance of religion in Balinese daily life. As you study the artistic and cultural traditions of the Balinese and examine the interrelationships between economic goals and local culture, you gain insight into the challenges of a traditional society affected by an international tourist population and increasing development. The Museumizing of Indonesia
Amanda Rath
Amanda Rath is currently a M.A. candidate in the Asian Studies program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa
Introduction
Mouse goes everywhere, through rich men's houses she creeps, and she visits even the poorest. At night, with her bright little eyes she watches the doing of secret things and no treasure chamber is safe that she cannot enter and see what is hidden there. In the olden days she wove a story child from all she saw and to each of these she gave a gown of a different color-white, red, blue or black. The stories became her children and lived in her house and served her because she had no children of her own. The above is an old Eikoi folk tale demonstrating a very sophisticated theory of aesthetics and creative sublimation. I apply this tale to explain Indonesian systems of nation building and methods of enforcing a national hegemony. Indonesia has created its national "story" based upon the many cultures contained within its national boundaries. It chooses from the rich as well as the poor, combining the many found treasures to weave its tale. Not all local "stories" will be deemed ap propriate to this national unity, which uses culture as its base. Those elements which fail to be assimilated or appropriated face enforced conscription or obscurity. Such political control makes the autonomous cultivation of local forms rare.
