Indonesia Introduction With a population of almost 200 million people on 13,667 islands, Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago located between the continents of Asia and Australia, and between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. Only 35% of the population live in urban areas, but there are more than 30 cities with 100,000+ population. Plus, five cities have a population of over one million. They are Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, and Semarang, and are all located on Java. To truly understand the socio-political culture in Indonesia, one needs to understand Java. Although the population has a significant Malay heritage, it is also diverse with over 300 distinct cultures residing within its borders. With each culture comes a unique language or dialect; however Bahasa Indonesia, the common language of the country, unites everyone. In tourist areas and population centers English is the most commonly spoken second language. Though the large majority of Indonesians follow the Islamic faith (85%), the intensity of their observance for their faith varies due to the large diversity within this nation. Christianity a distant second (10%). One important historic note is the strong sentiment against the Chinese. Keep this in mind and be sensitive to this reality. Fun Fact

Indonesian history/a history of Indonesia as an example

The Columbia Chronologies of Asian History And Culture , edited by John S. Bowman offers an overview of political history, arts, culture, thought and religion, science and technology, economics and everyday life of all Asian countries from the Paleolithic era through 1998. The more than 30 Asian countries are individually analyzed on 580 pages. According to its political, military, economic and demographic weight, a state gets more or less space. China is treated on 115, Japan on 75 and India on 120 pages. The almost 100 pages of appendices contain information on National and Independence days, scientific-technological achievements in Asia and a chronological comparative overview of what happened in Asia and Europe at a given time. The detailed index takes another 70 pages. To make a long story short, this is the most comprehensive Asian history available. The only, but crucial thing missing in this reference work is a bibliography which would allow a reader to dig further on a specific issue.
Let's take the entry on Indonesia as an example. Its story is summarized on 15 pages. The description begins with the Pleistocene epoch (approximately 1,8 million to 8 thousand B.C.). Early evidence (2000 B.C.- A.D. 500), early Kingdoms (500-1377) and the rise of the Islamic kingdoms (1290-1682) are the subsequent parts of the entry. The European presence in Indonesia takes a bit more than four pages. In 1511, Portuguese explorers captured the port of Malacca, erected a fort there and settled in, but Portuguese corruption and disorganization soon led to the loss of the sea-trade control of Malacca and to the rise of Sumatran maritime trade centers. In 1595-98, the first expeditions to the East Indies by competing Dutch trade companies took place. In 1602, the Dutch East India Company was formed with a merger of the competing companies. England also entered the spice trade. In 1605, the Dutch East India Company occupied Ambon and established its headquarters.

Why anger and resentment in Indonesia's eastern frontier province are rising to dangerous levels
By Keith Loveard / Jayapura A FIRST SIGHTING OF Irian Jaya reveals a land of immense natural wealth. To fly over Indonesia's eastern frontier is to witness one of the world's last untouched tropical rain forests, rising to snow-covered peaks rich in copper, gold and other minerals. But an on-the-ground look soon makes it clear that all is not well in paradise. Jakarta's efforts to integrate the province into its vast confederation have made the Irianese an underclass of strangers in their own land. In the central market of the capital Jayapura, a few Irianese traders sit on the ground with their vegetables and fruit. Behind them, businessmen from Java and Sulawesi occupy the stalls, selling food, clothing and shoes. The minivans that serve as public transport are painted with names redolent of Java, Sulawesi and North Sumatra. It is Javanese not Irianese who ply the streets at night, selling chicken satay from carts lit by hurricane lamps. Government and private offices are full of outsiders and formal commerce is dominated by immigrants from Sulawesi.

JAKARTA is a city of some ten million inhabitants. Like many other major Asian capitals, Jakarta is a polyglot of ethnic groups that all contribute to making up the city's collective culture. The history and culture of Jakarta has many elements of India, Arabia, other parts of Asia, and the colonial powers of Europe, interwined with its own. Jakarta has more than its share of diverse ethnic influences as it is also the capital of a nation with over 17,000 islands and 300 cultural groups, many of which speak their own language as well as the national language, Bahasa Indonesia As the prime gateway to Indonesia, Jakarta offers the culture of various regions and groups in the archipelago, in line with the national motto " Bhinneka Tunggal Ika " or Unity in Diversity.

The culture of Bali is unique. People say that the Balinese people have reached self-content. It is not an exaggeration that when a Balinese is asked what heaven is like, he would say, just like Bali, without the worries of mundane life. They want to live in Bali, to be cremated in Bali when they die, and to reincarnate in Bali.
It does not mean that the Balinese resist changes. Instead, they adapt them to their own system. This goes back far in history. Prior to the arrival of Hinduism in Bali and in other parts of Indonesia, people practised animism. When Hinduism arrives, the practice of Hinduism is adapted to local practices. The brand of Hinduism practised in Bali is much different from that in India. Other aspects of life flow this way.
      Traditional paintings
, faithfully depicting religious and mythological symbolisms, met with Western and modern paintings, giving birth to contemporary paintings, free in its creative topics yet strongly and distinctively Balinese. Its dance, its music, and its wayang theaters , while have been continually enriched by contemporary and external artistry, are still laden with religious connotations, performed mostly to appease and to please the gods and the goddesses. Wood and stone carvings, gold and silver crafts parallel the development of paintings, gracefully evolving with external forces to enhance their characters.

History
The Capital
... eastjava.com Indonesia is rich in art and culture which are intertwined with religion and age-old traditions from the time of early migrants with Western thoughts brought by Portuguese traders and Dutch colonists. The basic principles which guide life include the concepts of mutual assistance or "gotong royong" and consultations or "musyawarah" to arrive at a consensus or "mufakat" Derived from rural life, this system is still very much in use in community life throughout the country. Though the legal system is based on the old Dutch penal code, social life as well as the rites of passage are founded on customary or "adat" law which differs from area to area.
"Adat" law has a binding impact on Indonesian life and it may be concluded that this law has been instrumental in maintaining equal rights for women in the community. Religious influences on the community are variously evident from island to island. Unlike some countries art forms in Indonesia are not only based on folklore, as many were developed in the courts of former kingdoms such as in Bali, where they are part of religious ceremonies. The famous dance dramas of Java and Bali are derived from Hindu mythology and often feature fragments from the Ramayana and Mahabharata Hindu epics.
