Spanning the seas between Asia and Australia, Indonesia is the largest archipelago. The major Islands of Indonesia are Sumatera, Bali, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Irian Jaya .
Almost half of Indonesias 200 million people live in Jawa, an area about the size of England. Except for the tiny Islands of Bali, also densely inhabited, the population is relatively sparse troughout the rest of the country, much of wich is forest and jungle.Fleets of volcanic mountains spread gennerally across the north sides of islands, contributing to the build up of some of the world's most fertile lands.
"Unity in Diversity ", Indonesia's National motto, apply characterizes the nation. More than 300 ethnic groups and languages co exist here, altough Bahasa Indonesia, the national language, is spoken troughout the archipelago. The reason for this incredible diversity lies much in Indonesia's geoghraphics position .Early man along with many species of animal, was able to walk into what is now Indonesia from Asia. Fossil remains of an early upright standing hominid now reffered to as "Java Man" .

However, the myth of paradise is often marred by deep racial divides, religious warring, high-handed autocracy, government corruption, economic mismanagment and natural disasters. Indonesia Time and Date Indonesia Culture Back to Top Over the course of the 1980s, population mobility, educational achievement, and urbanization increased as Indonesians were exposed to the varieties of their nation's cultures through television, newspapers, schools, and cultural activities. Linkages to native geographic region and sociocultural heritage weakened. Ethnicity became a means of identification in certain situations but not in others. In a similar way, isolated hill tribes living in the interiors of the islands of Sulawesi, Seram, or Timor might express devotion to ancestral spirits through animal sacrifice at home, but swear loyalty to the Indonesian state in school and church, or at the polls. Economic difficulties further fuelled the growth of the opposition, in particular the powerful Indonesian Communist Party (PKI). In September 1965, a coup was launched by sections of the army with full PKI support. The immediate political struggle, which the Government eventually won, was one of the closest in recent history.
