This boy's school built a special desk that he can use from his wheelchair. Your son with DMD will be happiest if he leads as "normal" and complete a life as possible. For children, school is a central component of life. Not only does school educate the mind, it's also crucial for a child's emotional development. At school, he can learn social skills and appropriate behavior, make friends, discover talents and ways to excel, develop self-confidence, set goals and have fun. School is a great place to help children with disabilities feel like "regular kids." The days when children with disabilities could legally be prevented from attending public schools are long past. A series of federal laws has guaranteed children with disabilities an education in the public school system. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) also makes it illegal for a child care center or preschool to turn down a child simply on the basis of disability. (See "

    Significant Points
    • Excellent job prospects are expected due to rising enrollments of special education students and reported shortages of qualified teachers.
    • A bachelor’s degree, completion of an approved teacher preparation program, and a license are required to qualify; many States require a master’s degree.
    • Many States offer alternative licensure programs to attract people into these jobs.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Special education teachers work with children and youths who have a variety of disabilities. A small number of special education teachers work with students with mental retardation or autism, primarily teaching them life skills and basic literacy. However, the majority of special education teachers work with children with mild to moderate disabilities, using the general education curriculum, or modifying it, to meet the child’s individual needs. Most special education teachers instruct students at the elementary, middle, and secondary school level, although some teachers work with infants and toddlers. The various types of disabilities that qualify individuals for special education programs include specific learning disabilities, speech or language impairments, mental retardation, emotional disturbance, multiple disabilities, hearing impairments, orthopedic impairments, visual impairments, autism, combined deafness and blindness, traumatic brain injury, and other health impairments. Students are classified under one of the categories, and special education teachers are prepared to work with specific groups. Early identification of a child with special needs is an important part of a special education teacher’s job. Early intervention is essential in educating children with disabilities.

A criterion often used to determine whether a child has a learning disability. It asks, is the child working up to expectations? One "formula" for determining the presence of a discrepancy has been promulgated by the Illinois State Board of Education. Some districts have developed their own. Some scholarly texts offer alternative formulae. ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. This law follows the principles established under Section 504. It provides for the protection from discrimination of persons with disabilities and allows claims for compensatory and punitive damages. Adaptive behavior. A sort of "practical intelligence." It is usually measured by scales that identify how well a person manages within his or her own environment. ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder.

IDEA (The Individual with Disabilities Education Act)
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law enacted in 1990 and reauthorized in 1997. It is designed to protect the rights of students with disabilities by ensuring that everyone receives a free appropriate public education (FAPE), regardless of ability. Furthermore, IDEA strives not only to grant equal access to students with disabilities, but also to provide additional special education services and procedural safeguards. Special education services are individualized to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities and are provided in the least restrictive environment. Special education may include individual or small group instruction, curriculum or teaching modifications, assistive technology, transition services and other specialized services such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy. These services are provided in accordance with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), which is specifically tailored to the unique needs of each student. IDEA also grants increased parental participation and protection for students.

State and Federal Law ensures that "all individuals with exceptional needs have available to them a free, appropriate public education and related services to meet their unique needs." Programs and services are available for eligible pupils from infancy through age 21.

The school site Student Study Team /Child Study Team discusses and recommends intervention strategies using regular school resources and personnel. What is an IEP?
Each child in public school who receives special education and related services must have an Individualized Education Program (IEP). An IEP is a set of goals for a student, and a plan for how they will be met. An IEP must be designed specifically for a student and must be a truly individualized document that keeps the child's personal characteristics and needs in mind. The IEP gives teachers, parents, school administrators, related services personnel, and students (when appropriate) the chance to work together to improve the educational experience and result for children with disabilities. The IEP is created as part of an overall process that aims to identify children in need and connect them with the appropriate services and accommodations to improve educational results. Who Writes the IEP?
By law, certain people need to be involved in writing an IEP. These people work together as a team to write the IEP, which must be done within 30 calendar days of deciding that a child is eligible for special education and related services. Each team member brings important information to the PET meeting that adds to the team's understanding of the child and what services he or she might need. A PET includes:
    e Parents
e Regular Education Teacher(s) (at least one, if the child is participating in the regular education environment)

Special Education Special education services are provided in all Murfreesboro City Schools. Students are referred by parents or school staff. If eligibility requirements are met, an individualized education plan (IEP) is developed by a team consisting of parents and school representatives. This plan assures that all special education students receive a free appropriate public education. Special education services are provided for approximately 14% of the total school population in Murfreesboro in a given year. Statewide, approximately 15% are served. These figures indicate that Murfreesboro is doing a fine job of identifying and serving children with special needs. In an effort to meet the unique needs of exceptional children, flexibility in program organization is required. For some children, combinations of these programs may be provided (i.e. Resource and Speech). For others, supportive services in the regular classroom may be all that is needed (i.e. large print books or consultant services).

... Surveillance Data and Statistics IEP Nutrition Related Goals and Objectives T The IEP provides an ideal tool for integrating nutrition education into the school curriculum. It is important to note that every student with a chronic illness may not be labeled disabled and, therefore, would not have an IEP. Special consideration is needed to ensure that resources and services will be provided for chronically ill children with special nutritional needs or feeding problems. For example, a student with diabetes will require special dietary considerations during the school day. Nutrition services should be available to this student through a 504 accommodation plan. Feeding or nutrition modifications would be considered "necessary accommodations" for a chronically ill child. Incorporating nutrition goals and objectives into the education program will facilitate the delivery of services to improve the nutritional status of children with special needs. These goals and objectives will facilitate instruction on dietary needs and compliance. An outline of IEP goals and special considerations for writing objectives for children with nutrition or feeding problems is provided. This is followed by case studies which describe children with special nutritional problems. Examples of IEP nutrition goals and objectives which may be incorporated into their education plan are included.

Procedural Safeguards Special Education Individualized Education Program (IEP) Adapted from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education To better understand an IEP, consider that: Individualized means that the IEP must be written for your particular child, not a group or class. It addresses the educational needs of your particular child. If your child is age 16, or younger if appropriate, the district must tell you that one purpose of the IEP meeting is to consider any needed transition services, including those provided in the community, and that your child will be invited. Service providers from the community who may be providing services should be invited to each IEP meeting where transition services are discussed. (Transition is discussed in a later section.) How do you prepare for an IEP meeting? Your participation in any IEP meeting will be easier and more effective if you have thought about your concerns and what you have in mind for your child. Know what you want to say. Advocates and support from parent organizations can be helpful in preparing for an IEP meeting.
