    Introduction Today, talking about Indigenous peoples in Brazil means to recognize basically that: (1) in the lands colonized by the Portuguese, where later a country called Brazil would exist, there were already human populations; (3) certain groups of people who live in present-day Brazil are historically connected to these early peoples; (5) like any other human group, Indigenous peoples have cultures that result from the history of the relationships among themselves and between them and the environment; a history that, in their case, has been (and continues to be) dramatically altered by the reality of colonization;
    Indians, Amerindians
    Generically, the Indigenous peoples that live not only in Brazil but also in the entire American continent are called Indians. This name is the result of a historical mistake made by the first Europeans who arrived in America, who thought they had reached India. The continuous use of the word, even by the Indians themselves, has made it a synonym of an Indigenous person in Brazil.

    (Redirected from Native American A Sioux in traditional dress including war bonnet , circa Native Americans (also Indians First Americans American Indians First Nations First Peoples Indigenous Peoples of America Aboriginal Peoples Aboriginal Americans Amerindians Amerinds Native Canadians Native Mexicans Native Guatemalans , etc.) are those peoples indigenous to the Americas prior to European colonization , and their descendants in modern times. This term encompasses a large number of distinct tribes states , and ethnic groups , many of them still enduring as political communities. A comprehensive tribal list can be found under " Classification of Native Americans The terms "Amerindian" and "American Indian", both of which are derivatives of "Indian" (as is " Amerind ", though this term is more popular in linguistic circles), are not necessarily completely synonymous with "Native American". Although all Amerindians are Native Americans, not all Native Americans are Amerindians. "Amerindian" relates to a mega-group of peoples spanning the Americas that are related in culture and genetics, and are quite distinct from the later arriving Eskimos Inuit Yupik , and Aleut peoples native to Alaska and the Canadian Arctic ). The latter share their cultural and genetic commonality with other arctic peoples not native to the American continent, such as those from arctic

    INDIGENOUS PEOPLES' SEATTLE DECLARATION on the occasion of the
    Third Ministerial Meeting of the World Trade Organization
    November 30 - December 3, 1999 We, the Indigenous Peoples from various regions of the world, have come to Seattle to express our great concern over how the World Trade Organization is destroying Mother Earth and the cultural and biological diversity of which we are a part. Trade liberalization and export-oriented development, which are the overriding principles and policies pushed by the WTO, are creating the most adverse impacts on the lives of Indigenous Peoples. Our inherent right to self-determination, our sovereignty as nations, and treaties and other constructive agreements which Indigenous nations and Peoples have negotiated with other nation-states, are undermined by most of the WTO Agreements. The disproportionate impact of these Agreements on our communities, whether through environmental degradation or the militarization and violence that often accompanies development projects, is serious and therefore should be addressed immediately. The WTO Agreement on Agriculture (AOA), which promotes export competition and import liberalization, has allowed the entry of cheap agricultural products into our communities. It is causing the destruction of ecologically rational and sustainable agricultural practices of Indigenous Peoples.

The originators of the great culture represented by the ruins of Tiahuanaco were very likely Aymara speakers. Although subjugated by the Inca in the 15th cent. after a long struggle, the Aymara continue to dominate the region, with a population of over 2 million in the mid-1990s. the international community
    Growing public interest in indigenous people and a long process of international negotiations involving indigenous organizations prompted the international community to proclaim 1993 as the International Year of the World's Indigenous People, and then the period 1995-2004 as the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People, to focus on issues of concern to indigenous people. In addition, 9 August has since 1995 been celebrated as the International Day of the World's Indigenous People. Each of these steps has been important in the struggle for the recognition of the rights of indigenous people. These steps are all the more meaningful with the forthcoming anniversary of a landmark human rights document adopted by the United Nations 50 years ago, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Declaration recognizes the inherent dignity of every human being and sets forth in detail the rights to be enjoyed by all "without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status". Within the framework of the World Public Information Campaign, launched by the United Nations in 1988, the Universal Declaration has been translated into more than 40 indigenous languages and widely disseminated among indigenous communities. The United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education (1995-2004) also focuses attention on the importance of human rights education for all, including indigenous people, in view of the problems encountered by indigenous communities.
