guatemala action guide
Each day brings opportunities to promote peaceful change, from meaningful conversations on issues that matter to organized campaigns for justice. No matter what you do, every little bit makes a difference. Here are just a few ideas of some positive ways to take action to help promote human rights in Guatemala.
  • SPEAK OUT: Organize an event at your school and invite a guest speaker, show a film, organize an educational workshop on Guatemala. Write us for ideas.
  • BE GENEROUS: Raise money to help benefit street kids in Guatemala and make a donation to GYC's partner organization Nuestros Derechos or other human rights organizations working in Guatemala.
  • PUT IT IN WRITING: Write a research paper or give a presentation on a human rights issue affecting Guatemala for school. Write an article for your local paper, host a radio show, create a multimedia presentation or put information on your website about an issue affecting Guatemalans.
  • GET HANDS-ON: Volunteer, intern or work at an organization that works on human rights issues, in Guatemala or elsewhere. See the list of organizational resources below.

THE NATIVE AMERICANS OF NORTH AMERICA:
A Research Guide for the Lloyd Sealy Library
John Jay College of Criminal Justice
Ellen Sexton
Reference Librarian
This guide is designed primarily as an introduction to the resources in John Jay College library in the area of Native American studies. The aim of the guide is to help users of John Jay library to locate the material that the library has in this field and suggest some additional resources available in New York City. The term Indians of North America is the traditional term used by English-speaking non-Native Americans. Despite the widespread use of the term, both within the Native American community and the North American population, many people prefer to use the term Native Americans, acknowledging the fact that these peoples were the original inhabitants of the continent. The term is associated with the 1960's Native American campaigns for civil rights - campaigns which helped to change the policy of the federal government to one of self determination for the tribal communities. Throughout this guide, the term Native Americans will be used. The Native Americans are not a homogenous population. There are about 500 different tribes grouped together by language group, or by geographic region, or by cultural area. The cultural area concept allows tribes to be organized by a combination of geographical and cultural parameters. The ten major cultural areas are the Arctic, Subarctic, Northeast, Southeast, Plains, Plateau, Southwest, Great Basin, California and Northwest coast. Once you know in which cultural area the tribe you are researching is classified, you can concentrate your research strategy on works covering that particular area. For example, if researching the Tuscarora tribe, you would consult the volume of the

Back in the 80s, a national group of professors and staff lobbied TIAA-CREF (TC) for five years before it set up a socially responsible fund. Now we've lobbied again to improve that fund so that it would not only avoid certain
companies, but would invest in particularly responsible ones and in low-income area housing/business. This is becoming more standard in socially responsible investing and is viable financially. Besides academic
and activist group endorsements, (like the National Women's Studies Association and United for a Fair Economy), we're supported by Benjamin Barber, Dennis Brutus, Noam Chomsky, Sandi Cooper, Ursula Goodenough, and Howard Zinn.

This guide has been compiled with a particular emphasis on the history and cultural traditions of Native Americans in the United States prior to 1900. The sites selected represent some of the best native and non-native sites we found.
Although this site should be of interest to anyone interested in learning more about Indians, our criteria for selection of sites included a target audience of secondary and undergraduate students researching Indians in the continental United States.
We selected sites which would provide overviews as well as information on specific tribes and events in history. Our first priority for types of resources was sites where the information is available directly online; then online bibliographies and directories to indexes; and lists of sites where more information can be found. The selection criteria used was: subject relevance, authority, and currency (sites that appear to be updated regularly). In attempting to screen for authority, we placed an emphasis on resources found at sites maintained by educational institutions; local, state, and federal governments; historical associations; prominent internet document projects; and official tribal pages. The few personal pages we have included were cited and praised by several sources.
This page was created by two Catholic University of America Library Science graduate students. They have graduated and will not be able to maintain this page. The page was last updated on April 23, 1996.

    Overall Impression of the Site:

The overall impression of this site is favorable. The scope and content of the original kiosk exhibit could be expanded and used as an ongoing and evolving site on Haida culture, politics and resource issues; however, this was not the intent of the exhibit and financial and human resources for such a project may not be forthcoming. Not surprisingly the medium of the original design does not meet the expectations of a distinctive history web exhibit. Interpretation of Materials:

    Education/Outreach:
Specific education and outreach aspects of this exhibit are limited. There is no curriculum for the classroom, no educational games or activities, no public promotion of material and no documents available from the website. However, its use at Expo 1998 must be remembered in considering its educational reach, as well as, its availability in four languages.

We believe that as a community of ecologists living in times of unprecedented ecological change, we can no longer afford the questionable luxury of working solely within our own traditions if we are to learn to live sustainably. Conserving our options means, in part, conserving the diversity of ways of thinking about problems.
-Jesse Ford and Dennis Martinez* The Indigenous Peoples' Restoration Network's (IPRN) mission is:
    • to support native and tribal communities in need of technical assistance for environmental restoration and cultural rehabilitation, and
    • to assist leaders and practitioners in their efforts to apply traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) within their own vision of political, economic, and cultural sovereignty.
Indigenous peoples bear a cultural and spiritual tradition that integrates culture and nature. While this tradition has been badly fragmented under the impacts of modern industrial civilization, it persists to some degree in most traditional communities and has been maintained largely intact in remote places scattered throughout the world. - 1995 IPRN Founding Mission Statement The primary goals of the IPRN are:
    • to develop and use the tools of ecological restoration to enhance the survival of indigenous peoples and their cultures, and
