Treaty to Be Centerpiece of International Campaigns Around the World
Activists will be working with political parties to introduce the Treaty Initiative in parliaments around the world over the next year. In September 2002, activists will demand that governmental delegates to the Rio +10 Conference in South Africa endorse the Treaty to Share the Genetic Commons and make it the centerpiece of future biodiversity efforts. Jeremy Rifkin, President of the Foundation on Economic Trends in Washington, DC, says, "The gene pool should not be allowed to be claimed as commercially negotiable genetic information or intellectual property by governments, commercial enterprises, other institutions or individuals. The global gene pool is a shared legacy and, therefore, a collective responsibility." Mr Rifkin added, "A global treaty to share the gene pool is the most important task ahead of us as we make the transition into the Age of Biology." The Treaty Initiative to Share the Genetic Commons

Welcome to
1492: AN ONGOING VOYAGE
an Exhibit of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC
1492. Columbus. The date and the name provoke many questions related to the linking of very different parts of the world, the Western Hemisphere and the Mediterranean. What was life like in those areas before 1492? What spurred European expansion? How did European, African and American peoples react to each other? What were some of the immediate results of these contacts? 1492: AN ONGOING VOYAGE addresses such questions by examining the rich mixture of societies coexisting in five areas of this hemisphere before European arrival. It then surveys the polyglot Mediterranean world at a dynamic turning point in its development. The exhibition examines the first sustained contacts between American people and European explorers, conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600. During this period, in the wake of Columbus's voyages, Africans also arrived in the hemisphere, usually as slaves. All of these encounters, some brutal and traumatic, others more gradual, irreversibly changed the way in which peoples in the Americas led their lives. The dramatic events following 1492 set the stage for numerous cultural interactions in the Americas which are still in progress - a complex and ongoing voyage.

The members and affiliated entities comprising the Native American Heritage Initiative and the NDN Rights Project work to address civil rights and heritage issues related to the indigenous peoples of the North America. It is well established that where indigenous persons are subjected to dehumanization that oppression and denial of civil rights, and the inability to enjoy the same benefits that are available to other members of society that the oppression only gets worse unless action is taken to restore the rights and an equal position in society.

BACK TO MAIN ONLINE BOOKSTORE HOW TO ORDER A worldwide fight against biopiracy and patents on life By Martin Khor There is growing worldwide opposition to the granting of patents on biological materials such as genes, plants, animals and humans. Farmers and indigenous peoples are outraged that plants that they developed are being 'hijacked' by companies. Groups as diverse as religious leaders, parliamentarians and environment NGOs are intensifying their campaign against corporate patenting of living things. WORLDWIDE opposition to biological piracy' is rapidly building up as more and more groups and people become aware that big corporations are reaping massive profits from using the knowledge and biological resources of Third World communities. There is growing public outrage that these companies are being granted patents for products and technologies that make use of the genetic materials, plants and other biological resources that have long been identified, developed and used by farmers and indigenous peoples, mainly in countries of the South. Whilst the corporations stand to make huge revenues from this process, the local communities are unrewarded and in fact face the threat in future of having to buy the products of these companies at high prices.

The Politics of Indigenous Peoples and Movements in Latin America
This page identifies principal starting points for research on the politics of indigenous peoples and movements in Latin America during the twentieth century. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the issues involved with these topics, effective research strategies must include consulting various resources designed for specific disciplines. In selecting research topics, bear in mind that the Princeton University Library collections covering indigenous peoples are strongest for Mexico, with the Andes and Central America collected more selectively. Brazilian sources, nearly all of which are in Portuguese, are extensive for the 1960s to the present. Effective use of the sources here, as well as elsewhere, require appropriate search strategies. Central to this process of seeking factual information, statistics, or bibliographic citations is the understanding of the terms used for searching each resource, whether it be an electronic database or a printed volume. Researchers should also pay close attention to the required search protocols for electronic resources. For preparing a list of search terms, consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings (11th ed.) (DR) Z695.L52q; these terms should be useful, with possible adjustments, for searching databases other than the Princeton University Library and RLIN ones.

    http://www.natsiew.nexus.edu.au/lens/treaty/treaty.html
    Treaties with Indigenous peoples Broadly, a “treaty” is an agreement between two or more parties who seek to have their relationship with each other defined. Some examples of principles a treaty may embody include: The recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the “first peoples” of Australia
    • Recognition of the inherent and distinct rights that flow from recognition;
    • The establishment of national standards;
    • A framework for settling relationships between Indigenous peoples and governments at local, regional, state, territory and federal levels;
    Australia has no treaties with its Indigenous peoples.  Unfortunately, in the formation of Federation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were overlooked as relevant parties.  A national treaty with Indigenous peoples could have recognised and protected Indigenous rights and led to a just constitutional basis for the Australian Federation.  Canada and New Zealand both have treaties with Indigenous peoples.  Australia is therefore in the beneficial position of being able to assess, learn from and adapt the treaty models from other countries.
