The topic dealt with in this paper is the right to land of indigenous peoples. The methodology of the research has consisted in the analysis of a bibliography and documentation regarding the topic and the application of this analysis to a case study. All along the various chapters, the objective has been to explain why the right to land (including the preservation of their environment) is so relevant to indigenous peoples and which are the existing and potential ways to protect it. Introduction Back to Index The topic dealt with in this paper is the right to land of indigenous peoples. All along the various chapters the attempt will be to explain why this right is so relevant to indigenous peoples and which are the existing and potential ways to protect it. It is emblematic that, to look at these concepts in a concrete situation, the case chosen is the one of Mapuche people. Mapuche means people (

History and Discussion
of Native American Languages
At the time of first European contact, probably close to 1,000 American Indian languages were spoken in North, Central, and South America. Although the number of languages in daily use has steadily declined because of persecution and pressures on the Indians to adopt English, Spanish, and other originally European languages, well over 700 different American Indianor, as they are sometimes called, Amerindian or Native Americanlanguages are spoken today. In the United States many of the most famous linguists of the early 20th centuryamong them Franz BOAS, Leonard BLOOMFIELD, and Edward SAPIRtranscribed and analyzed North American Indian languages. Many descriptions of Indian languages are important in the literature of the linguistic school known as American structuralism. Today interest in Native American Indian languages is increasing, and Americanists, as those who study the languages are called, hold regular meetings to report on their findings. Current research on the native languages of the Americas is published in several periodicals, notably the International Journal of American Linguistics.

I. Introduction Who are Indigenous Peoples? People who inhabited a land before it was conquered by colonial societies and who consider themselves distinct from the societies currently governing those territories are called Indigenous Peoples. As defined by the United Nations Special Rapporteur to the Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, Indigenous communities, peoples and nations are
(Martinez-Cobo, 1984) self-determination ; based on their respect for the earth.
Despite such extensive diversity in Indigenous communities throughout the world, all Indigenous Peoples have one thing in common - they all share a history of injustice. Indigenous Peoples have been killed, tortured and enslaved. In many cases, they have been the victims of genocide. They have been denied the right to participate in governing processes of the current state systems. Conquest and colonization have attempted to steal their dignity and identity as indigenous peoples, as well as the fundamental right of

GENEVA - The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) should be modified to reflect racial and ethnic inequalities, instead of just social and economic disparities, said Brazilian expert Edna María Santos Roland.

T he planet's roughly 350 million indigenous peoples took notable steps on the international stage in the last decade. They got the world's governments to agree to create a body to represent them at the United Nations, the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, and to appoint a special rapporteur responsible for their human rights. Yet the years 1995-2004, named by the UN as the Indigenous Decade, did not see a significant change in the living conditions of most "tribal", "aboriginal", "native" or "first" peoples. Calling those conditions "precarious", the UN has declared 2005-2014 a second Indigenous Decade. IPS, with its network of contributors at the UN and linked to indigenous communities worldwide, is committed to tracking the world community's efforts to do justice to the rights and aspirations of these peoples..
