IU report discusses the good, the bad and the unknown
Editors note: The Indiana House Ways and Means Committee will meet on Monday to receive public testimony and to consider an amendment to House Bill 1001, the state budget bill. This committee will meet again on Tuesday to vote on HB 1001 (as amended). Included in HB 1001 will be a proposed school funding formula that will determine school funding for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years, if adopted by the Indiana General Assembly at the end of the bill process. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Indiana's method for funding its 292 public school corporations is complicated. Yet it is effective in achieving goals such as reducing variations in property tax rates across communities and breaking the connection between the wealth of communities and their level of education funding, according to a new Indiana University report released today (Feb. 14). The report, "Demystifying School Funding in Indiana," is the latest publication in the Education Policy Brief series produced by IU's Center for Evaluation and Education Policy. The brief, while not advocating any specific changes, urges state legislators to carefully consider how changes to the state's funding system will affect schools before such changes become law. Any change likely will benefit some schools at the expense of others, the report states.

Indiana Schools Kick Off Program to Provide Desktop Linux Computers to Every High School Student
Thursday, August 04 2005 @ 09:03 AM CDT Contributed by: Tommy ELKHART "Indiana schools aren't just talking about desktop Linux, students and teachers are actually using it every day," said Kevin Carmony, president and CEO of Linspire, Inc. "We're thrilled that a desktop Linux solution is being evaluated in Indiana with such success, and we're confident that other school systems will look to this deployment as an example for their own classrooms. This is a way educators can give every student quality, well-equipped computers at a price the schools can afford." Over the past three years, thousands of Linspire and Wintergreen machines have been deployed in dozens of classrooms across the state to explore the benefits of one-to-one classroom computing. The program is already having an impact in the state: Randolph Southern Jr./Sr. High School, in the eastern Indiana town of Lynn, is one of the schools that has been using the Linspire/Wintergreen computers for the past three years. There are about 125 systems in the school - one computer for every student in each of three English Language Arts classrooms, as well as one Biology and one Social Studies classroom. Annette Wilson, technical director for the school, estimates that approximately 90-95 percent of the 300 students at her school will be exposed to the new computers this year.

All of these traditional research sources are complemented by a vast array of on-line resources and databases , providing users with access to the total legal information universe.
The Library is a U.S. Federal Depository library, selecting approximately 20% of the materials available under the program. The Library is also one of only a few law schools that serves as a depository for U.S. Supreme Court records and briefs in paper. Greetings to Indiana school professionals. This publication, Checklist for a Safe and Secure School Environment (Checklist), is another of several resources being provided by the Indiana Department of Education. Our intent is to give ongoing support to your efforts on behalf of safety for Hoosier school-aged children and youth. This Checklist is provided as a means of evaluating not only existing emergency plans but also the other essential ingredients of a comprehensive school safety program. The format of the Checklist is meant to be user-friendly and practical. We invite you to let us know your opinions about its usefulness as well as to alert us to other needs you may have.

Sponsored by the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory and the Education Commission of the States NCREL is increasingly moving from policy publications to policy in action. The Indiana School Funding Symposium Summary is the result of a collaboration between NCREL, the Education Commission of the States (ECS), and key state policymakers in Indiana. The Indiana Education Policy Council was born out of this collaboration as a mechanism for achieving a common knowledge base and a neutral place to engage policymakers in nonpartisan dialogue around critical education issues. On June 22, 1998 the Indiana Education Policy Council held a statewide symposium to address the implications of alternative tax structures for Indiana's Schools. The Symposium Summary will give the reader two states' perspectives on school finance as well as a number of themes that emerged during the course of the day.
Indiana School Funding Symposium: Alternative Tax Structures for Indiana's Schools: Implications for School Funding
    Summary of Symposium Proceedings
Prepared by Judy Taylor IEC TOC Next Introduction On June 22, 1998, approximately 300 Hoosiers attended a symposium in the Indiana State Government Center Auditorium entitled, "Alternative Tax Structures for Indiana's Schools: Implications for School Funding." The symposium was sponsored by the Indiana Education Council, a bipartisan education forum organized under the auspices of the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) and the Education Commission of the States (ECS). In addition, the Indiana Department of Education and the Indiana University Education Policy Center provided support for the Symposium which drew a broad range of concerned citizens. Legislators, state and local school board officials, school superintendents, university professors, representatives from the Governor's Office and the Citizen's Commission on Taxes, teachers, administrators, and concerned tax-payers participated in the discussion.
