Indianapolis, Indiana Beyond Survival:
Meeting the Challenge of the Future Today To thrive in the future, libraries need to make plans today. As an optimist, I have no doubt that we are up to the task; but vision, collaboration, and hard work are necessary if we are to achieve our goals. Understanding what has changed in our world, while knowing what remains the same, is essential as we plan to meet the challenge of the future. Understanding the issues and envisioning and planning for a positive future will largely determine results. As members of our library community, whether academic, public, school, or special libraries, we are stakeholders in the future of our institutions and local communities. As members of the Indiana Library Federation, we increase our opportunities to influence the outcome. Instead of driving, I arrived by plane early in the morning. This gave me an opportunity to see some of the war monuments of downtown Indianapolis in a different light, literally. The day's keynote address was given by Syd Lieberman , an internationally recognized story-teller who taught High School English for thirty years. Mr. Lieberman began by explaining why libraries hold a special place in his heart. Specifically, he met his future wife in a library when he was thirteen. She winked at him, and he went over to see her. He praised libraries a place where a special type of education takes place. On one end of the spectrum there is education of the strictest order. Pupils sit in rows. They are lectured. The curriculum is well-defined. At the other end students are self-directed. There is no formal curriculum, and people meander about the space. The first place is your traditional school. The second place is a library. The bulk of Mr. Lieberman's speech consisted of a number of short stories. They were stories of his wife, his mother, and his children. They were stories depicting history (the Johnstown flood and the Holocaust) and current events (the Mars rover mission).

Got Access?
Mooresville Public Library (MPL) of Mooresville, Indiana, has worked diligently on a yearlong project titled, "Got Access?" The objective of the Got Access? Campaign was to heighten community awareness about the many outstanding services the library provides through online services and to share the expected online traffic generated by the campaign with area merchants through a strong community effort. By partnering with area merchants, local retailers could provide discounts for products and services for those library patrons purchasing a library card...wait? PURCHASING A LIBRARY CARD? Well, this is how it all started.... "The campaign initially began because Morgan County in Indiana had two library systems, Mooresville Public Library — a township serving Brown Township residents, and Morgan County Public Library — serving the county," said Diane Huerkamp, interim director of the MPL. "We were separate entities supported by different taxing units. However, we had a 'reciprocal borrowing' agreement that allowed any county resident to use either library system." Morgan County Public Library rescinded this agreement after 10 years, forcing one-third of MPLs patron base to purchase a Public Library Access Card (PLAC) at an annual fee of $26.00. "MPL wanted to accommodate those patrons living outside our service district who were accustomed to borrowing MPL materials," said Huerkamp. "We identified our library with a new library access card and began a grass-roots public information campaign."

Butler University W elcome to the new PALNI Project web site. The P rivate A cademic L ibrary N etwork of I ndiana was organized as a non-profit membership organization in 1992, and provides sophisticated resource-sharing and library automation services to its 24 member libraries. Visitors are welcome to select any of the menu items to the left to search the PALNI Online library catalogs, or to learn more about the PALNI project, organization, membership, or online systems. At this stage, this web site is a "work in progress". Frequent changes can be expected over the next several months. Although still unfinished, it already includes most of the information from the old PALNI Project site, but without most of the obsolete information from the old pages. For that reason, we have elected to move ahead with phasing out the old site, even before this new site is completely finished. We hope these pages will support communication among users of the shared PALNI system. Please return to this site often for the latest PALNI news and information Over time, we would like to turn these web pages into a PALNI "community" web site. PALNI library staff may register for their own usernames and passwords. When fully implemented, registered users will be able to post their own news articles, comment on postings by other users, participate in PALNI online forums, exchange ideas and information with their PALNI colleagues, and access protected system documentation, meeting agendas and minutes, and other PALNI archival information.
