22. Forging A New Library Network In Indiana

Indiana did not have a shortage of library network organizations. In fact, for more than 20 years, Indiana had 10 library networks. During the 1970s and 1980s, the financial picture for the networks was rosy, and the networks flourished. But the financial picture of the 1990s was different; a season of plenty turned into a season of want. As time passed and the networks struggled to maintain effective operations with dwindling resources, pressure from several quarters was brought upon them for fiscal accountability. Finally, the Indiana library world had to face a critical question: could Indiana afford 10 networks as the library infrastructure? Background of the Networks Authorized in 1967 when the Indiana legislature passed the Library Services Authority Act, the networks began operation in the early 1970s. One, the Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority (INCOLSA), was a statewide organization whose purpose was to oversee the automation of Indiana's library and information services. In addition to providing OCLC services for Indiana, INCOLSA did training and consulting on technology and automation. The other nine networks were regional, multi-type organizations called Area Library Service Authorities (ALSAs). Their charge was to provide assistance to member libraries, including interlibrary loan facilitation, reference/referral, consulting and continuing education, that would encourage the development of all types of library services.

AWARD WINNERS 2001 Public Library Friends, Large Budget Friends of the Jefferson Public Library, Metairie, Louisiana Encouraging reading and literacy are important goals of the Friends of the Jefferson Library. Their "Raise a Reader" program is a partnership venture in which the Friends, the library, and a local education association contribute to packets for new parents 1,838 were distributed last year. The Friends also donate books to public schools, provide gift certificates for the library's summer reading program, sponsor cultural programs, and make quality reading material readily available at their book sales. Innovative book sale publicity and book collection strategies helped them increase their income this year, and special events for staff members led to increased cooperation between Friends and staff. Public Library Friends, Medium Budget Friends of the Thousand Oaks Library, Thousand Oaks, California "Bookmaking - Evolution from Stone to Paper" was a Saturday program for all ages that offered the opportunity to observe masters of such skills as embossing, gold-leaf, hand-casting of 15th century type, binding, making paper and ink, and cutting letters in stone. More than 100 participants donated their time and skills, and an estimated 4,000 people attended. Hands-on activities for children added to the fun. Actors portraying figures from history read and told stories. The event was described by the director of the California Center for the Book as "smashing, spectacular, tremendously educational, and just pure fun."

during the Indiana Library Federation (ILF) conference in Indianapolis. to honor the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation s work with indiana libraries,
http://www.libraryman.com/indiana.htm
Indiana Because I am an Indiana native and I.U. is my alma mater, some folks at work asked if I would like to pick up the award. Are you kidding? What an honor! This was definitely a professional highlight for me. Several friends and most of my absolute favorite former professors were on hand. Also attending were SLIS Dean, Blaise Cronin, and American Library Association (ALA) 2001-2002 President, John Berry. For a Librarian, IU alum and a former Hoosier, well, to quote one of the speakers, "this is like the Emmy's!". I was happy, honored, excited and a little nervous to be a part of this event, but as expected it was definitely a professional high note and just a wonderful evening. And did I mention it was a dessert reception? Mmmm, chocolate. My only regret is that I didn't get a picture with former SLIS Dean, Mary Krutulis. Mary is an absolutely outstanding person and without her I never would have gone to Library school or had an Internship. There was a professional photographer there and I'll try and get some of his pictures up when I get them. This will be especially good because none of the pictures of the presenters/speakers that were taken with my camera came out. Those are pictures I want to show off to Grandma. In the meantime:
