Lake Michigan is one of the five North America n Great Lakes . It is bounded, in clockwise order from the south, by the US states of Indiana Illinois Wisconsin , and Michigan , which is named for it. Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes wholly within the borders of the US ; the others are shared with Canada . It has a surface area of 22,300 square miles ( 57750 square km ), making it the largest freshwater lake in the US, and the 5th largest lake in the world. It is 307 miles long by 118 miles wide. It greatest depth is 923 feet (281 m). It contains a volume of 4,918 cubic km of water. Its surface averages 580 feet above sea level, the same as Lake Huron , to which it is connected through the Straits of Mackinac . Geologically, Michigan and Huron are the same body of water. Both are part of the Great Lakes Waterway . In earlier maps of the region, the name "Lake Illinois" has been found in place of "Michigan".

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Thursday, March 12, 1998 Indiana's science standards rank 1 st in the nation and its mathematics standards rank in a tie for 15 th, , according to a report issued by the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation. The report calls Indiana's science standards "a model for clarity, accuracy, and completeness." On mathematics standards, the report complimented Indiana's Proficiency Guide as "very good, direct, and plain" but said it overuses "'activities' and 'real-world' applications" rather than "demanding mathematical content." "We have long held the belief that many of Indiana's academic standards were rich in content and usefulness, and these reports certainly help us spread that message," said Dr. Suellen Reed, Superintendent of Public Instruction. "Strong subject area standards provide the basis for Indiana's curriculum and guide educators in their curriculum choices and in the development of classroom strategies and activities," Dr. Reed said. "The development and constant improvements made to our subject area standards are being rewarded, and that is an added benefit to Indiana's classroom teachers and students."

Introduction There are five themes of geography: location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and regions. Each place in the world can be described by using these five themes. Imagine you are a geographer, and you must investigate Indiana's five themes of geography!
How would a geographer describe Indiana using the five themes of geography?
The Task Create a poster describing Indiana's five themes of geography:
    • Location: Where is Indiana located in America? In the world? Place: What are the landforms and other physical characteristics of Indiana? Human-environment interaction: How do people adapt to Indiana's environment? How do they use it? How do they change it? Movement: How do people, goods, and ideas move in Indiana? Regions: What different regions is Indiana classified in?

    Alfred H. Meyer
The Life and Work of a Midwestern Geographer
While his name is rarely heard in graduate seminars in geography departments today, Alfred Meyer had a remarkable career. Truly a product of the Midwest, Meyer was born in southwestern Illinois, in the small German Lutheran community of Venedy, Washington County. His college education began at McKendree College and continued at the University of Illinois, where he completed two degrees in geology. He continued his training in succeeding summers at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and finally the University of Michigan, where he earned a Ph.D. in geography. He joined the faculty at Valparaiso University in 1926, remaining there for the rest of his distinguished teaching career. Meyer partly made his unique mark on American geography through his research, which focused on the Kankakee Marsh and Calumet regions of northern Indiana and Illinois in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. The subject of his doctoral work, the Kankakee Marsh served as the early focus of Meyer's academic research and a showcase for his attention to detail. Most notably, Meyer reconstructed the vegetational complex of the Kankakee and examined the changing land use of the area, especially in light of the marsh's reclamation for agriculture (1935). The thoroughness of his fieldwork was not lost on those who advocated field study as an important component of American geography (1959). Meyer's research on the Calumet began with a study of the toponyms (or place names) of the region (1945). He was particularly interested in using place names to help reconstruct the settlement history of the Calumet. Meyer noted a variety of different kinds of place names, many tracing their roots to the Potawatomi Indian occupants of the region prior to 1830. The very term "Calumet," in fact, which was applied to over a dozen landscape features, likely derives from the Indian term for the reedy vegetation found around the southern end of Lake Michigan. While Meyer's analysis and cartographic depiction of the region's toponyms were important, his identification of recognizable stages of settlement would serve as the foundation for future work.

The southern portion of the state is a succession of bottomlands interspersed with knolls and ridges, gorges and valleys. Limestone caves, such as the big Wyandotte Cave, and mineral springs, as at French Lick and West Baden Springs, are found there. The unglaciated soil is shallow in S Indiana, and the cutting of timber has caused erosion, but there is still extensive farming. The capital and largest city is Indianapolis , in the central part of the state. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, with a 3-mi (4.8-km) frontage on Lake Michigan, is noted for its beautiful shifting sand dunes. Formerly a state park, the area was made a National Lakeshore in 1966. Four years earlier, in 1962, the U.S. Congress authorized the establishment of the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in S Indiana. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the site of the famous 500-mi (800-km) auto race, held annually. Sections in this article:

    Abbreviation:
IN Indiana means "land of the Indians." It joined the Union in 1816 as the 19th state. Indiana is a small state with a large population. The state's nickname is "Hoosier State" and its residents are commonly referred to as "Hoosiers" although no one seems certain just how the name originated. Maybe it has its origins in "Who's there?". This way the Indiana pioneers greeted strangers. It could also come from "husher", a colloquial term for someone, who uses his fists to keep someone else from speaking (="to hush"). Indiana is a state of mostly small towns and midsize cities. Its largest city and capital is Indianapolis, where the nation's most famous auto race, the Indianapolis 500, is held each year. Indiana has broad, fertile plains and is a part of the Corn Belt; but, it is also a manufacturing center. The varied landscape of the state offers a wide variety of activities.
