Internships Recent Experiences of Our Interns Christy Powers is a junior in the School of Social Work at Indiana University. She was a summer intern for the Interim Deputy Director of the Indiana Bureau of Child Development, Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA). She was involved in projects such as the Facility Financing Loan Program, the Search Committee for Deputy Director, the Building Bright Beginnings, and the Development of Web Based Instruction for Child Care Providers. She learned a lot about administrative social work by attending meetings, making professional contacts, and communicating with child care providers. She appreciated the opportunity FASR offered and learned a lot about the government system from my internship. The Facility Financing Loan Program is a partnership between FSSA, the Indiana Development Finance Authority, and SCORE. The program offers CAP loans to licensed child care providers who need to renovate their centers or build a new one. Christy made follow up calls to the providers to make sure they received adequate services.

For Grandparents and Special Others Raising Children Indiana
Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children A State Fact Sheet August 2002
Across the country, more than six million children approximately 1 in 12 children are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. Indiana has more than 113,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (“kinship caregivers”) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in Indiana and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system. A Look at the Numbers: Kinship Care in Indiana The data below show the numbers of grandparents who are living in households with at least one grandchild under the age of 18, as well as the numbers of grandparents who are the primary caregivers for these grandchildren. These numbers were reported by the 2000 U.S. Census and are available for every place (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau) in the country, including cities, towns, villages, and boroughs, on the U.S. Census website.*

About the ICCF Our Initiatives Employer Toolkit Grants ... Feedback Can you name Indiana's most precious natural resource?... ... His parents could. They named him Robert! It is hard to believe that we spend more money protecting the wetlands and peregrine falcons than we do protecting our children. There is no more important natural resource than children, and their parents know it. In Indiana, that includes the 60% of parents who work outside the home and for whom accessible, affordable child care is the issue responsible for more anguish than national defense, the economy and the environment combined. At the Indiana Child Care Fund, we understand this, too. And we're helping.
About the ICCF
History Our Initiatives Grants ... Feedback Our History In 1995, a group of state, national and local leaders came together to form a unique, unprecedented public/private partnership to address the critical issue of quality child care for our state's working families. Together, this group convened the Indiana Symposium on Child Care Financing, an award-wining initiative instrumental in building strong public/private partnerships for community child care. As the initiative gained momentum, the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, the Governor's Office and the Indiana Donor's Alliance, in conjunction with 17 Indiana corporations, proposed the establishment of an Indiana-based fund to turn public and private sector contributions into investments-investments designed to support the state's commitment to improve child care for working families.
